"Revolution"

In Modern Systems

make of it what you will, but it's the first even speculation that I've seen regarding the next console.

New type of controller, eh? Maybe it's a chainsaw!

Seriously, I wonder what kind of layout there could be that could top the types that are already out?

without using a D-pad, or A or B buttons... I hope they don't do something stupid...

It's like the review said, they're not afraid to try new things. Their biggest failure of trying new things was the Virtual Boy. I think they probably learned from their mistakes. With the "futuristic" type controls that are on the DS, I expect the new one to shine!

I'm not going to expect anything... We'll have to see how it turns out, I don't WANT and LCD touchscreen in my console controller, I've been known to throw them at times and an LCD isn't going to survive that.

another link:

I expect whatever it's going to be will be really innovative, but if it works in the hands of the public, that's what is yet to be seen...

again, like the Virtual Boy, innovative, but the headaches weren't cool. I had a VB, I think I still do somewhere... likely lost all the games though...

You know the Rollerball deal in the middle of the keyboards on laptops? I could see them trying to implement some crazy stuff like that. That wouldn't really work, but something along those lines. I heard about those headaches, glad I never tried one!

I'm not sure about the Rollerball thing, it's not much like nintendo to steal an old technology and rebrand it. I was discussing it with a friend of mine, and we determined that they'll likely go with a more simplified approach. Since most people are finding that they don't have the time to learn a new game. With 14+ buttons on controllers and all, a lot of games are hard to get into.

That's true. It is very tough to just sit down and play a game on the newer consoles. Perhaps they will go more basic...

The Virtual Boy never gave me a headache... I have it with 3 games, I think-- I got the system for $25 when they decided to end it, and the games were $10-20, I think-- WAY back now...

Why don't they just make a control pad out of silly puddy. That way, we can all confrom its shape to the maximum confort level.

I've come across these pages:

both contain interesting info, but I wouldn't take any of it too seriously just yet...

New type of controller, eh? Maybe it's a chainsaw!

haha a chainsaw is already a controller lol i saw it its looks pretty cool haha

Thanks for the two very interesting links.
Of course you can't take it too seriously, but I love such speculations.

both contain interesting info, but I wouldn't take any of it too seriously just yet...

yeah thats cool but you never know what could happen. All that could be lies! i guess the only thing we can do is wait!

Of course everything could be different and all could be lies...
But you never know.

I rather read good lies and speculations than read nothing.

Let's wait for the E3... in May, is it?

Let's wait for the E3... in May, is it?

I do believe it's in may... There is going to be so much amazing stuff unveiled this year. I wish I could go.

Yeah, I wish I could go, too.

From the first time I heard there is something like the E3 I wanted to go.

But the States are quite far from Germany, don't have such money.

Well, I'll watch the video game magazine DVDs, those have good coverage on stuff.

as I understand it, normal people can't get in anyway, it's pretty much just press and presenters...

That's the other downfall.

I heard of people who had a job at some little newspaper (that has nothing to do with games or something) and they allegedly got into the E3 getting the permission because of their job as "press"
I don't know if it's true, though.

Let's wait for the E3... in May, is it?

I do believe it's in may... There is going to be so much amazing stuff unveiled this year. I wish I could go.

So do I i will attend when i get older though im sure!
Man i cant wait to find out about all the stuff!

UPDATE: I've discovered some more news regarding the revolution, and even an image! again, this may all be fake, and likely is. But it's fun to look at what people come up with

This hugely looks like a fake... Even I could produce such a "startup" screen on my PC.

But as I like rumours, I'm OK with that.

Let's all count the milliseconds until E3, which starts on May 18th. (one day befoe Star Wars??? )

Well, I found some more... these are clearly 3d renderings, but hey, I'm cool with that, people speculations is always fun.

I think that design is pretty cool even if it is unlikely that that's the way it will end up looking. Seems like most people commenting on that site disagree with me. I like the one that says it looks like a toilet seat

and now a claimed video... I don't think I need to state the obvious warning again...

I've never seen such a round toilet seat.

I like that design, too.

And I like that sign especially. Simplistic, but somehow cool.

well, I consider this find to be bad news, as we all know how fragile LCD screens can be...

I wonder just how much of this controller is a touch screen... if not all of it! That's a mighty weird approach to a contoller. Kind of scary, too. I'm not sure if I like this idea. I better wait to make speculations, though.

I agree, it seems like this would be very awkward....

Well, cracked8ball just gave me a link to a demo of what is "supposed" to be the new Nintendo system. Now, if this isn't it, then the people that put it together did a real good job on the video. I don't think I believe it, but one can at least dream....

(This is 12 MB in size, but I got it with my slow dial-up)

If anything, you should at least get a kick out of the vid.

Let's download that video.

On today's Nintendo of Europe homepage I read that Revolution will become the smallest home console from Nintendo. It will be as high as 3 DVD-cases and just a bit longer as DVD-cases they wrote.

In a few days we will know more perhaps.

Yeah, I just read the same thing. Anyway, that video was pretty cool. haha ... and here I was thinking that the PS2 was a sandwich!

I don't quite believe the video, however it does have some demos of stuff I've never seen before. If this is illegitimate, then the person that made it has one of the greatest visions of a futuristic system to date. I do know that such technology was shown off on TechTV so far as the camera recognizing the surroundings, but this would technically kill off any hopes of 2D gaming for the future consoles. Nintendo needs very badly for whatever they got now to take off, since I think if they fail at this next home console, they're gonna be dropping out of the console race.

The video is a fake

hah nice video. But i dont know how well it will do. The headset idea kinda turned me off. Dont want another VB repeat. Man i hope nintendo somehow wins this year though. Be great to see them at #1 like in the good ol 80's.

That's a nice video, but I didn't really understand the part with the millions of castles.
It's good to see there are such dedicated fans out there. Although it's made up I like it. Would want to see more such.

I still shutter to think of what the controller will be like though. Gonna miss those A B buttons.

Perhaps that was symbolic of how the 'Revolution' is a million times more POWerful than the N64, but I imagine the video editor just wanted to show off their 3-D rendering skills (which they are obviously very good at).

Unfortunately "helmet" gets me thinking "Virtual Boy part 2".

See, that's a concern for me as well. They claim backward compatibility, but if they're going with some radically new controller, that's going to be near impossible.

Perhaps you can plug in a Cube-controller?

Or you can configurate the new controller as if it were a cube one?

So many questions and doubts... I hope they will reveal the info soon.

Well, we've got this now:

I don't think I will get a Rev. now. I am a die hard fan, but I want my normal controlers.

Nothing has been mentioned about the controllers yet, other than that the won't have a D-pad or, A and B buttons.

judging from the e3 event, and what they had to show of the console... things aren't looking good for Nintendo in this Generation. Sure, backward compatibilty and emulation of all previous consoles is cool and all (and will likely sell it for a lot of memebers of the forum here) but that's only going to appeal to a very small market...

I'm missing the good old days with the NES, SNES, and N64. Nintendo was so big then. It seems they may fade away.....(hope not)

Well, I'm getting fully annoyed with the fact that they keep claiming to be the most innovative company around... NEWS FLASH guys... DDR with Mario, Mario Golf 45, Mario Baseball, Mario swimming lessons isn't innovation, it's taking a crappy idea, and plastering a tired old character all over it.

and the Revolutionary thing about the "Revolution" is that it can play games from 20 years ago? as much as I appreciate that aspect, that's something you market as a small draw to the console, not as the main feature...

I'm just not excited...

this wasn't meant to be a bashing Nintendo post, but... well... they deserve it, they aren't even trying anymore!

The idea of bringing back old games is nothing new to Nintendo, however it may boost the interest in the older consoles. I think the Revolution is gonna need to pull something BIG or keep console prices low to be competitive.

Well, what this tells me is that we all should be rushing to NES ROM sites for games... I'm sure there'll be a fee on the Revolution, and this gives Nintendo a reason for shutting down sites....

This is actually more info than I was expecting to get out of Nintendo from this year's E3 regarding "The Revolution". It looks like we've got another "sandwhich" in the making.
The biggest surprise is still yet to come, in the form of those mysterious new controllers.

I think it's their marketing strategy not to boast around with hardware facts and stuff.
I won't judge Nintendo for doing nothing until they show their controllers and until it's clear how good the games will be.

DDr. Mario I hearrd of it a while back and I thoughht it looked awesome.
I still think it looks awesome (I big fan of DDR).

Mario Baseball same Its gonna rock!

Well, they will charge you for the NES, SNES, and N64 game downloads. I don't know if Nintendo could shut down ALL NES ROM sites, so I'm not as worried, but just incase, I'm downloading all the games I want/love.

You can play old games on it? I did not know that. I hope not all NES ROM sites get shut down.

Where Nintendo could really shine here is if they were to release games previously unreleased or not in that region. I figure certain games ("Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz" for example) would be well accepted at this time.

One thing that SCARES me is the mention of this being a pay-to-play deally. This could potentially mean inflation on prices of old games, since people may be more willing to pay for Nintendo's older consoles with cheaper games, thereby increasing demand. Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with people coming towards the roots, but to say that this won't affect prices of older systems is a joke. Lets hope they can keep prices way down on their pay games so there's minimal damage.

some new news.

I just read that article and i am quite pleased. I just hope the third party companies do not charge for the fees for downloading the classics.

You know what, I'm sold! I think this is the console I'm going to keep my eye on for now. The Xbox and PS3 I would like to have as well, but just to be able to get past games (Nintendo, POSSIBLY third party) is a really cool idea. I mean, yeah, most of us own them or play them through emulation, but I think this is a Super Cool thing that they're doing.

I'll definitely wait 'til the smoke blows over on the prices and what-not, and to see how well everything runs with the downloading. My eye is on the Nintendo product for now...

Finnaly, someone else who is interested in the Rev. Personaly, I can't wait for it. I still think Nintendo has a lot of fresh ideas for the next gen of gaming.

Count me in for the Revolution, too.
My heart beats for Nintendo, so I can't help.

But I'll buy it AFTER the first price drops.

Same here. If the Rev. starts off as 300 dollars. I'm going to wait till 200 or 250 dollars.

lol Im just now getting a Game Cube. I'll get the Nintendo Revolution when the price drops as well. prob. about the same time they make a new system knowing me. lol

I too get new systems really late. So dont feel bad. They just need to release them cheaper.

source:

while most of that is cool, a lot of those games are going to have control problems, many of them used special controllers/accessories, and that was the whole gimmick of the game.

that said...

WE GET TO PLAY 64DD GAMES!!!

I'm still bitter about the whole 64DD ordeal. I want Earthbound 64!

bad news guys...

I blame all the fools that bought those classics series games on the GBA...

Well, once again us retro gamers catch no breaks...

I guess we should be used to it. We are forced to pay high prices on eBay, or grab NES ROMs that aren't exactly the most legal thing. I suppose emulation will have to keep being the way I play games that I can't find... oh, the life of crime.

that sucks. Im sure someone will find a way around this. maybe we could just hack the NES ROMs and make 'em work on the new Nintendo? (note: when I say we, I mean someone other than me.)

I figured that the idea of all those being for free download was way too good to be true. Nintendo knows that they can still make money out of their old titles, why would they stop that now? Also if I bought a Revolution and had immediate access to all those games (especially the N64 ones) I probably wouldn't be buying any Revolution games for a long time as I'd be too busy playing the likes of Banjo Tooie, Perfect Dark and so on. Nintendo certainly doesn't want that. They might give away a few NES or SNES Games to encourage a purchase but probably only the ones that most people will lose interest in quickly, like the black box games.

I didn't believe for one second that Nintendo was going to offer the ability to play classic games on the "Revolution" for free.
However, the fact that the Revolution has this ability still earns it valuable points as the next-gen console of choice (for me) so far.

Of course, people will always find ways to get around the whole "pay to play" deal, and so will we (eventually).

We still have no info on the Revolution's new revolutionary controllers. They might be able to play those games utilizing the default peripheral's abilities.

I didn't really believe when people said downloads would be free. Would have been a nice idea, but not really practicable.
I think they will give you some titles for download in the Nintendo club. You buy Mario Revolution and get SMB1-3 or something for free on their homepage.

Apart from that I'm sure people will hack the official downloads or normal NES ROMs to work on the Revolution.
So in the end, we might get many games for free.

any news on what the controllers will look like yet? I tried to find something but got nothin'.

They will reveal the final design of the system at the end of the year. That's what you can read everywhere.

well Im sorry, I must have not been looking it up right. thanks for letting me know though.

No problem. I just read it in a magazine yesterday.

I'm very excited about the controller. Hopefully it won't look as stupid as the PS3 boomerang (??) thing.

I hope this has not been posted yet , but I heard from another forum that that Revolution will have the ability to download old games from NES,SNES,N64, and GCN.

as a matter of fact it has been posted...

perhaps you could read things before posting junk?

Sorry for being mean about it, but I've already deleted 10 posts in the last 10 minutes...

Yea my bad, I was so ecited to tell plau at the time I had to go somewhere. Won't happen again

Im sure everyone has seen the new look of the Nintendo Revolution, right? yeah you have. anyways, do you like the new look? if not, what would you change about it? I personally would change where you plug in the controllers and put them on the front, not the top. (I've read alot in this post and Im sure nothin' like this has been posted. if so Im sorry.)

The plugs on the top are only for Gamecube controllers so they shouldn't be visible when you don't use them.
The Revolution controllers will be wireless.

I quite like the design Nintendo showed. Perhaps it's my favourite among the 3 new consoles before XBox 360 and Sony (which I like least).

I hope this console works out for nintendo. They are a great company with a lot of heritage and I think it's a shame that they appear to be losing out to Sony and Microsoft sales wise, at least here in the UK.
At least they'll always have fans like us

oh cool. wireless. I didnt know that. I might get one when the first price drop takes place. I was gunna wait untill the 2nd or 3rd but the more I read and hear about it, the more I want it. Nintendo is the best ever.

I don't that 100% for sure, too, but I strongly suppose the controller will be wireless.

You know, wireless is cool and all, but that means batteries. Isn't bad enough that we have to pay huge amounts of money for a new system, then have to "pay-to-play" as well? I think I saw something somewhere that said there would be an option on the back to plug in, but honestly, I can't remember. If there's not, that would be very uncool.

I know the Xbox 360 controllers are claimed to be rechargable, hopefully Nintendo does something similar.

I think they will be rechargable.
Nintendo also made the GBA and stuff rechargable, so that there's no need of batteries.

Ah... good point! Now to find an available socket in this apartment

Thanks for pointing this out Roth. I aggre with you on this. Why the hell does wireless have to be better to most people. Sure you can play games easier without cords getting in the way but the hassle of recharging and crap is ridiculous. I hope they have an option for you to plug in somewhere. I think i read you could with a gamecube controller. I hope thats true. If not..then nintendo messed up in that department.

I don't see a problem with wireless controllers, the battery often lasts 40 hours +, and you just plug it in when it's not in use (if it's rechargable) you should never have to worry about it.
