What was Capcom thinking!!!!!!!!

In Mega Man

So I go to the store with one thing in my mind....

Megaman Anniversary Collection!

I figured, "Hey, I'm on a roll with these GameCube games, might as well keep going with it!" I get there, and the same woman looks at me like, "You again?" I laughed and asked for the game.

I get home, and my son and I are both anxious... (he's an MM fan, also ).
When I got the game in and selected which game to play, I noticed that the controls are.....BACKWARDS!!!

I've been playing Megaman almost since it came out, and to me the jump button belongs to the right, and the fire button to the left of that... not the other way around! There is probably no way I can get used to it, mainly probably because of muscle memory on alot of parts....

Why would they do this AND not include a button configuration menu?!? Totally wrong. I plan on taking this game back probably tonight or the first thing in the morning....

You can't configure the buttons?
If that's true it's ridiculous.
Every good anthology let's you configure the buttons.

That's a bad thing.

Thank you for the warning. I thought about buying that collection in Japan.

Yeah, it's horrible. After so many years of playing Megaman, there's no way I can switch up. It doesn't feel very natural. No configuration for the buttons is an awful thing..... I'm still in awe....

Capcom screwed it up, and with the music too, it doesn't repeat right.

The thing that kept me from picking it up... the d-pad on the Cube controller... I simply cannot use that thing. I have insanely large thumbs, and that just doesn't work... same reason I can't play the NES Zelda games on the Cube...

Did you read the manuel or ask the store manager about it? I think thats kind of stupid w/no configing it.

I agree , My friend gave me the game after he was done with it and I can't even play it , it's so bad. I can't get the buttons right after all those times beating the Megamans on the NES. It'll be good trade bait.

Well, when I went to take it back the other day...

THEY WOULDN'T TAKE IT!

Something about copyright laws, and they could only exchange it for the same game! I don't even know anyone who could copy a GameCube game! Man, does that piss me off! Now I'll have to go to a pawn shop to get anything out of it...

I did see a pawn shop that had CV: Symphony of the Night... maybe I'll go there...

No, he actually didn't read me before.

That's normal. Once you opened the game they can't take it back and give you your money back. I think that's the same everywhere on the world. You can't copy Cube games so easily, but e.g. PS2 games can be copied in no time, that's one reason why they can't take it back. The other reason is, what should they do with an already opened product? Sell it again?
It's bad for the customer, but that's the situation.

Basically it boils down to the fact that I didn't know much about the game before purchasing. Maybe I'll have to start reading reviews or something. I tend to hate most reviews I read, though. Most of the time people rate something really high just because it's something that they're familiar with, and don't actually judge the game accordingly.

If anyone knows a site with good reviews, let me know...

Yes, there's a great problem with reviews.

The best reviews site I know is only in German, unfortunate for you.
I'll post the link anyway.

They have Gameboy Color and Advance, N64, Gamecube, DS. No NES, because the site started when the NES was already over.

A good place for RPG reviews is
.
A friend of mine is news editor there. For RPGs this is a very good source.

No, he actually didn't read me before.

Isn't that a "manul" correctly?

Manual comes from the Latin word manus, which means hand, more specifically from "manualis", which means "of the hand" or "belonging to the hand".
In old French it actually was "manuel" when I get that right.

My name originally is a Hebrew name with the meaning "God be with us".

That was today's lesson of etymology.

heh i liked the anniversary collection. The main reason i got it is because i never did finish mm8 .

Did you have the GameCube or PS2 version?

From what I hear you can configure the buttons on the PS2 version. That would help immensely. I can't stand when buttons are weird and you have to change style for a game that you played a million times.

If you can configure on the PS2, I'll probably get that version.

you will get use to it p.s if your a real Megaman fan u wont let that stop u from playing it but they did screw up with the buttons it took me an hr to get used to it so dont worry

if you're a REAL Megaman fan you have the carts for the NES, so you don't need to buy the crappy emulator version on some other console...

That's true.
The original is still the best thing. And best played with the original controller.
The original carts have cool artworks and the Japanese versions come in different cart colors. I think I have to get those when I have the chance.

I definitely want all the carts. But usually they go for around $20 apiece around here when they have them. I'll be aiming to get them, but in the meantime, it's much faster to be able to play them all for $20.

I'm so glad there was topic opened for this!

I was really pissed off when I played the MM anniversary collection on my cube. It's obvious the guys who coded the MM collection are never the same guys who coded the originals.

I've posted on some GC hacking sites to see if anyone could patch a GC iso image to change the button mappings. Unfortunately I've had no replies yet.

The wrong buttons was enough to get me to take it back but...surprise surprise, the screwed up buttons wasnt a good enough reason to return it lol.

...

The main problem I have with it is that I've been playing the same games for years with the same button configuration. I have no clue why they couldn't just make it the same button order in the first place. I agree that I've played games that are configured differently, but when you're used to playing a certain series one style, then it gets changed on you, it's kind of like a slap in the face. I do get more used to it the more I play the games on the Cube, but I don't think that is the route they should've taken. People would want to purchase the collection because it's the same games they used to play, and want to relive the magic that was MM at that time. I really don't think a curve on playing style was really needed.

As I understand, the PS2 version has a button configuration menu. Would it have been so hard to incorporate that in the GameCube version?

...

the game cube just is sooo good it didnt need one i just had to get used to it after dieing a bujillion times at likr the first couple levels

i noticed that the frst time i bought it. i thought i went crazy, (now i know that im not).

it took me a few days to a week to get used to that. (i still mess up on the controlls sometimes, and i've had it for half a year!

Do you guys still think it's worth getting?

yes. other than the controls, you will not regret it.

it includes Megaman 1-8 and 2 arcade versions

oh yeah this one magazine told me how to get the unlockables so i play it and i loved it for evar

the arcae versions are very easy.
(im saying INSANELY easy)

yeah i know it sux how easy it is

Oh yes the POWer fighter games are EAASY. And roth i have the almighty GC version. From what i seen i dont THINK it has a confiq option but..o well always the "sandwich version" heh.

hey roth, quit crying you'll get used to it after a little while, it was weird for me at first too, but after playing it a few days it seems normal and playing it on NES feels weird....

one thing capcom did right with it is the rapid fire thing, if you press Y 3 shots come out at once, works good on those enemies that take 349234984 shots to kill

that's no good either... you don't want the right way to feel weird!

The PS2 version does indeed let you change the configuration and it auto-saves so you don't have to change it every time you put the disc in. Another complaint I read about earlier on in the thread was the music. The PS2 version has all of the original songs (with the exception of the MM6 intro) and the quality is improved (especially in the original which needed it the most) but it's not too digitally overhauled that it takes the feel away. What was it that was wrong with the Gamecube version?

I think the Anniversary Collection should have included the rare Wily Wars games instead of the arcade games. If they wanted to put a fighting game on it, I think it would be awesome to have a 2-player game where you can control any of the robot masters and have them battle each other. That would be freakin sweet. I love the collection though. I'm not sure if this was the first of its kind, but I noticed other franchises like Sonic putting out collection packages soon after.

I've got the best 'Megaman Anniversary Collection' of all... the DreamCast version!
Made it myself with a combination of NesterDC, DreamSNES, and DCgnuboy. Has all 6 original NES Games, Megaman 7, and even the GameBoy ones. Features perfect button layout, music, and game play (except for 'Megaman 7', which is a little slow).
The only one I missed was 'Megaman 8' (for obvious reasons). I even used a Megaman menu theme. It rocks!

Hey Yann.... errrr... Z.E.N, could you post some pics of that so we could see what it looks like? I'm interested to see the Megaman theme.

Awsome man, its things like that, that made me wish i owned a DC. Can you custom the menu and such?

any chance u could burn that one?

These images are the ones I used for the startup menu and the nesterDC main menu.

These are just the background images though. The actual screens will have selectable font and custom screenshot previews in the black box in the main menu.

Yes. I made all the images myself. I can even add the font style/color/size (which I did, the actual "Megaman font" is just how it looks in the game) and I can add background music. There's even a way to add divx intro movies, but I'm not quite advanced yet. :p

I DID burn it. However I'm not satisfied yet. I'm going to add mp3 soundtracks, picture illustrations, text instruction manuals, codes & tips, etc.
It's going to blow the retail version away but for now it needs more content.
(It also needs more cowbell.)

I agree with everbody that said changing the music was a mistake. Especially the changes made to the Megaman 2 one. The NES version has some of the coolest music and I was looking forward to some of that on Surround Sound and...well, at least the game was relatively cheap. I just pop the original in every now and then. Some games are like hearing old songs on the radio, they bring back a lot of memories.

Z.E.N can you send me the file so I can play it on my DC?

I'll put up a link to the SBI file once everything is complete.

I gave up on this project last year, but I still have all the files so it's just a matter of reaquainting myself with the DreamCast's file system (which is actually much less complicated than XBOX's) and putting it all back together again.

However, there are some important changes to be made...
I need to redo the whole Super Nintendo portion of the collection because the emulator I was using for 'Megaman 7' (DreamSNES) does not have customizable themes. Although I praise the coders of DreamSNES for making SNES emulation on DC a reality, I will also crucify them for being bastards and ENCRYPTING THE DAMMED MENU GRAPHICS!!!
Thanks a lot guys. Now I have to rebuild the whole thing with a completely different emulator.

So when I do finish this project, expect to be playing 'Megaman 7' on SuperFamicast and not DreamSNES. It's not quite as good, but it least it will still have a Megaman theme to match the NES and GB portions.
I'll throw 'Megaman X' on there for completeness too.

I disagree. i mean, maybe for beginers, no.... no, not even for beginers. it makes it less of a challenge, and people just discovering the game should learn to play the right way. the way NES had it. (correct buttons, no rapid fire, no navi mode) forget all that crap.

I agree with you. "Back in the day," I tried using the turbo function on the NES Advantage, and it tended to get Megaman into more trouble than it was worth. On 1, when you're sliding down that conveyor or whatever it is, and the bullets fly toward you, that's the only time when rapid fire's really useful. And you can kiss your platforms goodbye quickly if you forget and leave the rapid fire on!

Any progress with this, Magic Potato Ninja?

I know what you mean. Oh, man, I hate it when the controls are screwed up like that.
