New Collector....where to start?

In Collecting

Hey guys. When I was a kid, I had a small NES collection. It's bugged me for a long time not to have that collection anymore to this very day. I decided to begin recollecting the games I had, and a WHOLE lot more. The question is this: Where do I start? I plan on doing the majority of buying on ebay, but where else?

Also, are there any specific games to go after that are a staple to every collection? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

It's kind of hard to tell somebody where to start collecting.

I'd say, start with the games you like. Then get the classics. Super Mario, Zelda, Megaman, Castlevania,... and not to forget Karnov!

eBay is nice, but can become expensive.
I'd try flea markets, garage sales, pawn shops (if you live in North America).

And always have a look on the "buy/sell/trade" forums on the nesfiles.

you could even try asking friends at school or work. thrift stores are good too, although Goodwill is starting to catch on, and jacks up the price for anything Nintendo related

if you buy from eBay, get lots with a bunch of games. it ends up being cheaper, and the shipping should be cheaper too. instead of say $4 shipping for 1 game, you'll pay $7 shipping for 5 games.

Sounds great. Thank you both for taking time to reply to a new guy! I hope to have a respectable collection to take pics of soon. =)

Even if it's a small collection, pics are always good.
I'm sure you already saw the "show your collection" thread.

You mean the "NCN is Extraordinarily Jealous of Everyone Posting Here" thread....yes, I saw it.

You mean the " is Extraordinarily Jealous of Everyone Posting Here" thread.

Really, if you want to be a serious collector, I wouldn't try to anywhere. Hell, I've "started" by tracking down those games that I absolutely, fervently adore, and I have yet to hit over twenty games.

If I were you, I would focus on finding nes items, any items, and focusing on finding good deals. Once you have a core collection built up, then I would start narrowing my tastes.

Sounds perfectly reasonable. I think I'll start drawing up an outline of what I have for my personal collection, then build around it. Thanks for the tip!

Oddly enough, Adventures of Lolo is the third item on the list I am currently writing out. Interesting!

And yes, I'm a HUGE puzzle/rpg freak.

I started collecting about 6-8 months ago and I am up to 180ish games! I bought almost all of them at an average price of $1-$2.....

Ebay the best place to start if you don't have any flee markets/pawn shops near you (just watch shipping prices!). And as said before.... BUY IN LOTS! I also take ANYTHING as long as it is cheap enough.... Even duplicates (make good for trading ).

Dragon Warrior?

Bionic Commando isnt an RPG but a very Great Game, along with Contra.

Kickle Cubicle is where it's at.

Dragon Warrior is also on my list. I also remember Bionic Commando. It is the #2 most wanted game on my list. I have very fond memories of this game!!! As for Kickle Cubicle, I've never played it. Sad but true.

Bah. puzzles are overated.

For a good puzzle one that's guaranteed to drive you insane, I'd bank on Solomons Key. As for RPG's, Dragon Warrior, of course, and any of the Ultima NES Games. And I can't do any better than Manuel when it comes to the staples.

I'd bank on Fire 'N' Ice. Greaat game.

Damn good game. Only rare game that I have, too.
