Anime? Manga?

In Off-topic

What do you think about Japanese animation and comics?

Do you have favourites?

My favourites in manga are:
Slam Dunk (Takehiko Inoue)
Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball (Akira Toriyama)
Fushigi Yuugi (Yuu Watase
I''s (Masakazu Katsura)
What's Michael (Makoto Kobayashi)

Do you know any of these? (I'm pretty sure everybody knows Dragon Ball)

As for anime, I love the works of Hayao Miyazaki. I own nearly all on DVD, like Totoro, Kiki's Delivery SerVice or Spirited Away.
I also like funny anime like The Adventures of the Mini Goddesses ()

I haven't seen an anime that I actually like in a long time... The last anime movie that I remember diggin' was Ninja Scroll, and it's been years since I've seen that.

As far as comics, I never read any (since I can't read Japanese!) However, I saw a Golgo-13 comic in Okinawa once, and now I could kick myself in the head for not picking it up....

Golgo 13, a classic among classics...

I was always fond of Dragon Ball Z, say what you like, but I enjoyed watching it. the action and characters were all cool. It just held my attention better than anything else I've seen.

I don't know about comics, but I've seen plenty of animation.
For TV anime I like 'Cowboy Bebop' and a couple of series featured on Tech TV's original show 'Anime Unleashed'- which are 'Last Exile' and 'Lain'.
Lain is absolutely frightening. One of the most well constructed animes I have ever witnessed.

For movies, it's definitely the first 'Ghost In the Shell' and 'Grave of the Fireflies'. I wouldn't recommend 'Grave' to just any action oriented anime fan, however for fans of a well told emotionally driven story, it's a must see.

I saw one 'Golgo 13' film (the one with the "Queen Bee") and it rules! They really need to make a new video game based on the edgy film version of Golgo's character.

As for Dragon Ball Z, I tried watching it once but I couldn't stand the constant screaming and the rediculous angry faces the characters make (in addition to the art style which makes all the the DBZ characters look like mentally challenged midgets).

basically the only anime i watch are fooley cooley and trigun.

Dragon Ball Z would be a good anime, they just cut out so much material from the German version. 3-5 minutes of violent scenes from every episode. It's not so funny watching it then.
I like the Dragon Ball comics more. Have all the 42volumes at home.

i was watching Fist of the North Star on ACTN channel awhile ago, thought it was pretty funny.

That's truly funny. But still better (?) is the real action movie of Fist of the North Star. The main actor looks so dumb. If you have the chance you should watch it together with friends.

I was going to start a topic on this, but I found this one.

I'm getting more and more into it now.
I've seen Ghost in the shell, Akira and Spirited Away. I'm also a fan of Studio Ghibli's work, I recently bought the cat returns and naussica of the valley of the wind. Liking them both. I saw howls moving castle at the cinema, I liked that as well.

Any more reccomendations apart from those in previous posts?

I like Ranma 1/2 (got the first 2 seasons on DVD) and have watched stuff like Armitage, Bubblegum Crisis.

My husband HATES jap anime so I haven't watched it as much lately.

I dunno, i don't really like it.

got to for some cheap pirated but good anime.

I like Trigun, Furi Kuri, Love Hina (was funny, Princess Mononoke, Ninja Scroll, Full Metal Panic. etc. etc.

They're are quite funny and Amusing .

Well, I've started watching anime (more), and I can still say that I hate 90% of it. However, there are a few that I absolutely love, like Cowboy Bebop. It had humor, but it was genuinely funny, they didn't rely on retarded expressions or idiotic situations (like Trigun, or Evangelion).
...
I hated, show. Same with Samurai 7.

Anybody watch Gungrave, or Vampire Hunter D? Those seemed interesting, but I never got around to watching them.

the only "Anime" i've ever been able to watch is Lupin the 3rd. and there's one other one that come on Adult Swim, i forget what it's called, the guy is half demon and half human or something? i think it's Inuyasha? maybe

Lupin the 3rd was awesome.

Lupin always reminded me of Duke Togo... not sure why. I think it's something about his appearance. Ah, well. It's all about Jigen, anyway.

As for Inuyasha... uh, I'll leave that one to Commander Campkill. Reminds me of Dragon Ball Z. Ugh.

Sorry, NES-Luke, but I'm afraid I can't share your interest in DBZ.

DBZ isn't that Bad, its not the Greatest, and Anyways the original Dragon Ball is Better.

Wasn't there a Dragon ball episode where a guy said
"fee, figh, fo, FUCK.
That corrupted my mind, when I heard that.

im not too sure.

Now that I think about it, at least the characters in DBZ had different attacks. Inuyasha has what, three moves?

I HATE DBZ! (and all the spinoffs)

That's not Anime; it's pure crap.

But's that's just my opinion.

It was funny when namek was going to explode in five minutes for like 10 episodes.
Mister Satan is the best

Allright, here's my impression of DBZ..

"Look! A nemesis."

"I'm stronger!"
"No, I'm stronger."

"I'm stronger!"
"No, I'm stronger."

"I'm stronger!"
"No, I'm stronger."

"I'm stronger!"
"No, I'm stronger."

"Look! I'm talking!"
"Now we're fighting!"

"...And fighting!"

"...And fighting!"

"...And fighting!"

"...And I'm dead!"

"...But I'm "

"So what?"
"I learned a new move."

"So we're fighting!"

"Current nemesis dead; repeat process."

Eerie just how accurate that is.....

I take it your a big fan?

I saw a film with Lupin the 3rd in, it was called the castle of castriolago (I'm not sure if it's spelt right) and it was a mighty fine film. It was a Miyazaki film, so it automatically qualifies as cool.

Holy Crap Miyazaki Rocks, , and Lupin thats just too good.

Eerie just how accurate that is.....

Oh,

Got a question about Lupin, though. How come it's spelled and pronounced (in the Japanese version) Lupin, and the English version pronounces it Lupon? What are we, French? It's got an "i" in in it!

Miyazaki's movies are the best.
And Lupin III rocks. Lupin is just so damn cool. (And Goemon, who likes to cut planes in half with his sword )

Zenigata, i think it was, in one episode about some kinda wine, some guy Keeps on calling him stuff like Mr. Origami, and stuff like that.

Yeah, that was a damn funny episode. I liked it when they all got hangovers from the wine.

Goemon: "You never get hangovers like this with sake."
Lupin: "Gee, maybe that's because "

Goemon: "You never get hangovers like this with sake."
Lupin: "Gee, maybe that's because

It's funny because it's true.

finished watching an episode of Gigantor. I would like to reaffirm, for the record, that it was the greatest show ever. My reasoning?

1. Robots. Japan is filled with them. You can't walk five feet without tripping over some robot. They have to build new robots to get rid of the old robots, which are then hijacked and used for nefarious purposes.

2. Every single character in the show has the IQ of your average parakeet. Seriously. You keep expecting them to attack their own reflections. It's awesome.

3. The fitting tropical-island-beat themesong.

4. The mind-bendingly stellar animation.

5. Eight year olds can drive cars.

oh anime YOU ARE SO SILLY

uh i've enjoyed

Cowboy Bebop
Fooly Cooly
Sailor Moon (SHUT UP)
Cardcaptor Sakura (SHUT UP! AGAIN)
Pokemon (SAY ANYTHING AND I WILL STAB YOU GODDAMNIT)

funny is its true.

Sailor Moon (SHUT UP)
Cardcaptor Sakura (SHUT UP! AGAIN)

I'm gong to explode, and it's all your fault. Just wanted to let you know that.

The only two animes that I have ever truly, in every sense of the word, liked, are Ghost in the Shell (movies and tv shows. Manga doesn't count, because it's concentrated mind-rot, know matter what the plot is) and Cowboy Bebop. Both have deep (as in; really deep. As in, not fake, contrived, or "meaningful"), likable (as in; interesting, believable, and usually not irritating) characters. They have interesting (as in; not stupid, and actually has a point) plotlines.

As for other animes, the best I can have is a love/hate relationship. Take Big O and Evangelion, for example. I absolutely the stylish, fluid, intricate, seizure-inducing robot battles.

However, I absolutely loathe and detest plotlines, and, finally, I hate their themesongs.

Big O's themesong has two lyrics. Do you want to know what they are? "Big O". Now repeat that. Do it again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again.
Congratulations. You just sang Big O's themesong.

Now, you may be curious as to why I hate Evangelion's theme song. First of all, it's J-bop. I hate J-bop. Second of all, it's exactly like the show; contrived, overly artsy, and "meaningful". Here's some of the lyrics.

A cruel angel's thesis
Will someday fly high from the window
If memories are betrayed by
The overflowing, burning pathos (emotions).
Young boy, shine like a legend,
Holding the sky in your arms.

I don't care what the hell anyone tells me, that doesn't mean . It's gibberish. Which is exactly what makes it "meaningful".

...

Damn, Ghost in the Shell kicks ass.

sailor moon was funny and not too bad, and cardcaptor wasnt all that bad either, but, the Big-O theme song was the best part of the show.

Well, my friend yesterday loaned me his CD with a very special anime on it, something called "GantZ". He can't talk to me about it without cracking up. He told me that it had everything that an anime have.

Insane violence, gore, excessive and wholly unnecessary nudity, a nonsensical plot based on an equally nonsensical manga, only hilarity, too!), and, of course, relentless child abuse.

Well, I watched it, and... it's perfect. I recommend that everyone over the age of sixteen watches this. I want to tell more about it, but... it's indescribable.

I haven't been able to watch any new anime in a while but here are my favorites

Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Outlaw Star
Golden Boy- Anyone else watch this series?
FLCL
Vampire Hunter D
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Vandread
Azumanga Daioh (I have no clue why this caught my eye, but it did...)

DBZ is on my "I'll watch it" list. It was my favorite, but after watching the series over and over, it sorta loses its luster.

Golden Boy is Hilarious, im glad someone else has seen it.

I think everyone should watch it. Its only $20 for all 6 episodes.

GantZ Update:

Just finished the first twenty one episodes, and has died, except for the self hating main character. Show highlight: A girl gives her life for the wussy, mullet-bearing second banana character, by throwing herself in front of him while acid is thrown at said mullet-bearer.

The acid eats through her and cuts her in half. Her last, drawn out words are, as follows;

"Kurono-Kun, I... I like you."

Then she dies.

Basically, if you're emo, then you'll love this show. And if you're not, it'll provide endless amusement.

I love anime, but not all of it. These are the shows I watched:

One Piece
Gash Bell!!
Dragon Ball series
POWer Stone
Fullmetal Alchemist
Bleach
Case Closed
Ninja Scroll
Eureka Seven
Naruto
etc.

I always watch Bleach together with my wife.
Do you still watch it?
Now that the "Bount" story is over it's gonna be interesting again.

POWer Stone? I didn't know that was a series... Time for some downloading

Yeah, Bleach comes on and I watch it every Friday. POWer Stone is on youtube starting with this:

For Anime and Manga I enjoy Dragonball/Z/GT. I also must say I am a fan of Hentai... I know I am not the only one here on the forums who likes Hentai also.

You like, Hen/Tai:

How perverted! lol

NOBODY UNDERSTANDS ME!!!!!

LOL @ Aaron I got to say I like Hentai myself. There was this one series that I loved called Rei Rei Missionary of Love.. but for the life of me I cannot find it in any stores or torrent sites.. Anyone seen Bible Black? I tried giving it a watch.. but alas it was too out there even for me.

My fav Anime

Ninja Scroll (Best Anime EVAR!!)
FLCL
Big O
Ghost in the Shell
Bleach
Full Metal Alchemist
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop

Paranoia Agent is entertaining... Even though most the time I'm like WTF is this about?

All who like anime should try to watch "Samurai Champloo". That's a very nice series.

Very true!!! How that escaped my list I'll never know! Beautiful animation and a rather compelling story line!

I've watched mainly just anime movies (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D), but my favorite series, by far, is Berserk. I wish the would continue the series, but atleast they have the Manga. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

My current favorite is. Its not for the faint of heart but I totally recccomend it.

I recommend the "One Piece" manga. The Japanese version of the anime is good too, but try stay away from the 4Kids version.

Next recommendation from me:
Kamichu.

Very well animated show. It plays in the town my wife's grandparents live in, so I know lots of places that come up there. That's one reason why I like it.

Been watching loads of Bleach. Amazing Anime. And it's pretty funny also! I recommend it!

Actually that is on my list to download... Since manuel has been talking it up so much, I thought I'd give it a go.

You MUST give it a go.
If you don't find that one funny and entertaining, there's somethinbg wrong with you.

You must also watch the Japanese version with English subtitles.
You have to sign up in order to download but signing up is free.

I mostly download the raw version without subtitles and with commercials still in. More interesting for me.

Well you see I need the subtitles because I don't understand Japanese to well.

Ha! I know.

The beginning of the series I downloaded with subtitles, because the raws weren't seeded any more.
Most of the time the subs are good. Sometimes, they are completely off, though. But that's mostly in unimportant situations as far as I noticed.

The website I posted as Raw episodes of Bleach also! Hey Manuel have you heard of Death Note? Another Good anime. Also I really like the Digimon anime.

Yeah, I also download Death Note for my wife.
Apart from that we bought all manga books for Bleach and Death Note.

I guess it's time I should post the Anime I like:

Digimon:
-Adventure
-Adventure 02
-Tamers
-Frontier
-Savers

Bleach
Death Note
Bible Black
Naruto
Inuyasha
Ranma ½
DragonBall
DragonBall Z
DragonBall GT.
Astro Boy (Old series not the new one)
Rockman.EXE
Sonic X

I finshed reading all the DragonBall and DragonBall Z mangas, there is no DBGT manga. I read a few Naruto and Ranma ½. Sad that Manga's cost almost $15.00 here... So Manuel whats your favortie Anime of all time? It's hard to choose a favorite.

I guess my favourite anime of all time is a movie called "Tonari no Totoro". It's from Studio Ghibli.
My favourite series would be "Fushigi Yugi".

I know this isn't anime but have you seen the Megaman cartoon from the early 90's? I really like the Rockman.EXE anime (Megaman NT Warrior).

Yeah, the Ranma manga is good, but the tv series doesn't really follow it at all after the first season or so. If you are really into Dragonball you should check out . They have a weekly Podcast and a forum with lots of intelligent people.

The Ranma manga is excellent. Much better than the anime.
I have the complete Ranma manga series in German. Recommended.

Thanks Godzilla!

Jeez Manuel you have everything!

Yay! You're right, I have tons of stuff.

But I still want more! I'm unsatiable.

By the way, I have another recommendation for you all. It's a bit lesser known anime.

"Haunted Junction". It's wacky and silly. I.e. it's good.

Is that "My Neighbour Totoro"? I like that film, especially the cat bus. Howls Moving Castle is my favourite Ghibli film, along with "The Castle of Cagliostro" although they are all good.

Yes, sir, that's "My neighbour Totoro". I've watched that movie so many times already... There's virtually no action in there, but it's so peaceful and charming, I love it.

Howls Moving Castle is on the bottom of my Ghibli ranking, together with Nausicaa and Laputa. Castle of Cagliostro is great. In fact, most Lupin III movies kick ass.

Started watching Hellsing today. Pretty cool stuff, gonna sit down and watch as much of it as I can before the wifey gets home.

It took me a while, but I recently got a hold of " Demashita! POWaa Paffu Gaaruzu Zetto!" In English- POWerpuff Girls Z! The actual Japanese remake of the US Cartoon show. It is soo fricking crazy.

I should check that out. Is there alots of fighting in PGZ?

tons, plus blossom has a fricking
you can get fansubs of it at
