The Xbox 360 thread.

In Modern Systems

I noticed we didn't have a proper Xbox 360 thread, rather we have a few different ones. I thought it would be better if all the xbox 360 stuff could go in here, it would make it easier and neater. Also, it's the only next gen (or is it now current gen? ) console out, so hey, it deserves one. Also, the PS3 and the Rev have thier own.

Anyway, feel free to discuss.

I'm pretty stoked about the 360, but I want to wait until the next board revision before purchasing it. What with all the bugs and crashes that have been talked about on the net, I'm sure there will be some sort of fixes on later revisions. That was the main factor that made my wife and I decide to get the regular XBox for now as opposed to the 360. We'll probably purchase it in another year or something... it's going to be hard waiting that long though

The 360 is awesome looking, but the only games that I am really, uber rpg of the next gen consoles, Mass Effect.

Those RPGs would be the only games I could enjoy.
I'm no big shooter and sports games fan...

The 360 isn't selling very well in Japan. Maybe they dump it in a sale for 100$ some time, then I'd think about buying it.

Although i've not had mine long, I haven't experienced any problems, but after reading various things on the 'net i'm slightly concerned.
Anyway, on the whole, i'm pleased with it so far.

Don't stand it up vertically. 'Should be fine.

my brother said that he read that in Japan, the 360 is doing better than the PSP at the moment.

One of two things...

Your brother is a liar.

or

The thing your brother read was written by a liar.

The 360 is having a hard time selling 500 units a week, while the PSP/DS war usually hits in the 30 thousand mark for each.

Had mine vertical since I got it (dec 23rd) no problems whatsoever.
I'm enjoying it, tired of my 6 games though..

I went to Gamecrazy and played the Demo for Full Auto it was pretty cool.

I've been stading mine up, mainly as my desk is overcrowded. I should make room and lie it down as i'd hate to mess it up.

As for the 360 out selling the PSP in Japan, I don't believe that. I've read in countless places that the 360 is struggling in Japan. Did the original xbox do poorly in Japan as well?

Well hey, i might have mixed up a few words, i know its not the two systems my brother just said he read it somewhere. and why would he lie about it?

Well, you have to understand that most 360s aren't having any problems... however, the problems that are happening (such as the supposed disk scratching) have been blamed by some on the fact that it wasn't made to be played vetically.

The supposed disc scratching can be blames solely on stupidity. you can play it vertically or horizontally with zero problem, just don't move it while the console is on (which should be common sense with any console...) the scratching is only caused when morons switch it from horizontal to vertical while the disc is spinning.

I never said he was. I just don't believe it, that's my own opinion.

Hey David.

You have a 360, do you by chance have a wired controller with it?

if so, Could you see if the little disconnect section on it would connect with the disconnect section on the Xbox 1 controller cable? I've been wondering if the 360 controllers would work on the XBox 1 since I looked at that disconnect and noticed that it was very similar (if not exactly the same) on both consoles.

my are Wireless. and i know you did ask David not me.
but i saw on in the store and looked similar.

I had a quick look and it is very similar, but they are not exactly the same. However, I don't have an xbox controller (from the original one) so this is how it appears to the naked eye. But I think they're not the same. I'll get an xbox controller from my friend tomorrow and check then, just to be sure.

Well, what was the verdict? I'm pretty anxious to find out, 'cause using a 360 pad on my Xbox would be absolutely awesome.

I won't be able to test it until monday, but according to a friend who tried, it doesn't work.

Nope, it didn't work i'm afraid. Shame, really.

Double post, but it needs bumping. Are there any games you'd like to see realeased for the 360?
I'd love for a new Ninja Gaiden game to come out and a new lego Star Wars. I'm looking forward to Top Spin 2, Final Fantasy and Morrowind coming out. I'd also like a 3rd party hard drive to come out, as they're damn expensive.

I am trying not to even think about that system, let alone what games I would like to see on it.

I am still mad that I didn't go and buy two or three of them when they came out! I had the money/time/ability to wait for it. I could have bought them and sold them for twice as much on ebay and then made money and a free XBOX 360. I just got lazy

the 2 RPG's from mistwalker.

And chromehounds.

O.k, I have a completely noobish question, but I need reassurance with this, as it's going to cost me a lot of money.
I am currently using a memory card to save my progress/stats and so forth. However, now hard drives are back in stock i'm going to get one (mainly to play a few original xbox games). Would it be possible to copy the data from my memory card to my hard drive? I imagine so, but it would be helluvah annoying if I cant, as i've mode a lot of progress through some games, and don't want to start again.
Has anyone tried this, or know that it works? Please?
I can't try it on a friends, as I don't know anybody else who owns one.
Thanks.

If that's not possible I'm quite sure you could sue MS for that. At least in the US.
I don't own one, but I can't imagine that this shouldn't work.
If you don't get a quick and good answer here, some XBox360 forums would also be good to ask your question.

As far as I know, it works with most games. You'll likely run into a few that won't. I think Tecmo likes to disallow copying.

I do imagine it will work. I could still use the memory card for games that don't work, but it would be so much easier if I could copy the data.

it's not called "morrowind" that was the last elder scrolls game on xbox1. The new one is called oblivion and it looks sweet as well as Gears of War and Mass Effect. I kind of wish I would've bought my xbox 360 though so it could be normal if you know what i mean. I guess you'de have to be me to understand that though. I am glad I got a 360 somehow though but i'm vomiting sick and tired of just pgr3 and Call of duty 2. It's getting sooo old. I'm going to get oblivion and full auto they are the coolest games either very near or already out.

Does any one have an hdtv for your 360? do the games look better on hdtv?

Of course they look (quite a lot) better on a HD screen.
Why did they invent it if it wasn't so?

Well, i'm going to play my violin, Uber Newb style.
And yes it looks a million times better on an HDTV. They're pretty pricey though.

How is The Xbox 360 doing in Japan is it doing better then the first Xbox did?

Quite terribly...

There are even stores that sell it under 20.000 Yen (180$ or so?), I heard, and that's with HDD.

Why does the Xbox 360 sell so poorly in japan are they waiting for the PS3 instead?

Perhaps. They love their Sony and buy for name only it seems.
Another thing is that Microsoft doesn't have so much of the Japanese's beloved RPGs on their consoles.
A console without lots of good RPGs can't do well in Japan it seems.
If they had FF12 exclusively on the 360 the whole situation would look different I think.

...Or, their games aren't quirked for the Japanese market. Nintendo made a killing with Nintendogs alone over there, remember?

I've been thinking about picking up an Xbox 360 but i'm not sure if i should get the Core or the Premium one i don't have an HDTV but my TV has Component input.

Get the premium...

Wireless controller - $50

Hard Drive - $100

Difference in price - $100

money saved right from the start - $50

Also, the hard drive is going to be required soon enough anyway, and even if it's not, you need it to download demos from the Live Marketplace.

I'd go for the "premium" pack too. The only reason I got the "core" was because nowhere had the "premium"
The only real problem with the "core" for me is the lack of a hard drive. I'm not bothered by the internet things that come with the "premium" as I won't be playing online.
If you can't get a premium, and don't want to wait, get the core and a memory card. I've four games on mine and a load of room left, but you will need a hard drive eventually. I'll be getting one soonish.
Anyway, go for the premium.

If you plan to buy it, you'll have to go for premium. Word.
The basic version is basic-ally a rip-off.

Uber Newb was telling me that microsoft isn't supporting the core packages anymore??!!

Yup. And I finally found the story on digg.

It says at the bottom it's an April fools joke.
But, if they wanted people to buy hard drives, they should be more readily available. I've tried there are some at an o.k price on ebay, but they want a lot for postage.

Ha! Guess I should a lot more time to reading entire articles. Sorry, atari.

So how do you guys think the Xbox 360 will do now against the PS3 when it is released?

MS just announced Fable 2, and Forza 2, and the 360 premium doesn't cost $4000000000000000000, I think it'll continue to do well.

I think it will continue to do well, as long as they bring out some good games. The main advantage that Sony has is that the PS can sell on brand name alone more than xbox (but i'm sure most people have heard of microsoft)

On lots of forums you can read that people are upset about PS3's high price. If they all really won't purchase a PS3, as they claim now, Sony might have problems and this would be good for MS and Nintendo of course.

But as already said several times, the Playstation brand name alone is likely to sell quite an amount of PS3s.

I think a smart move from Microsoft would be to reduce the price of the 360 the week before the PS3 launches, just to take some of the limelight away from the PS3 and make it look even more expensive.

I'm pretty sure MS will lower the price until PS3 launches. Maybe 300$ instead 400 for the premium version? Then it would be half the price of the PS3 and still give you graphics as good...

Much better, the 360 works out of the box, you don't need to buy a remote to use it. It's also progressive scan, the original XBox wasn't. If you have the VGA cable, it also upconverts the video to whatever the current set resolution is.

Alright cool. I wouldn't mind seeing what the MS Market Space is like. I mean I like how you can buy games Online via the serVice, like Street Fighter 2010 2 with Online play. I know it's more then $10 but maybe it will drop in price soon? Who knows. When ever it does I may check it out when I get a 360.

What do you guys reckon to the xbox 360 elite? If you don't know what it is, its a new 360 model, with a HDMI input/output/whatever and a new 120GB hard drive. Its also black.
I'm not too sure how popular it will be. Not many people will have HDMI compatable screens. However, i'm sure people will want the bigger hard drive but its quite expensive on its own. Also, I think it looks really bad in black. I'm hoping that when it rolls out (April 29th in the US I think) it will lead to a decrease in price for the core and premium models.

I did a pretty big write up on it on my blog, I think that for most people, the premium is still going to be the place to go. It really has everything the Elite has, aside from HDMI, and MASSIVE storage, which most people don't need and will never use.

That said, I do want one, because I do have an HDMI capable TV, and I'm really picky about video signals. the extra hard drive space I'm not really too concerned with, if my 20GB gets full, I can always delete some demos I haven't played in a while.

Personally, I like the way it looks in black, but unfortunately that's a complete Contrast to all of my current accessories.

Ok then, how about this then? You buy the Elite when it comes out, then we trade case, controller & accessories, faceplate, and hard drive

I just think the black makes it look a bit tacky, but the colours not really important. I agree with you on the fact that many are still going to go for the premium. I'm pretty sure that the hard drive will sell well, as many people have been complaining that the original is "too small"

I am really looking forward to Fable 2. The first one was really good expect just a little short in length.

Is there any way to Hack the 360 and put your own Hard Drive in it? Like how you could with the First Xbox.

You can plug in just about any type of USB storage deVice and put things on there, but protected content can't be moved to unprotected storage mediums. So things like game saves and the like will require a microsoft hard drive or memory unit.

I was at 4 stores today and all of them had the price for the premium 360 25% down (from 399) to 299 Euro. Is that a hint on a price cut or something?

On a sidenote:
Game prices at Gamestop in Munich are ridiculous...
Most 360 games cost 64.99 Euros (around 87$). They ask 69.99 for PS3 games (94$). What's that??
Well, even a 25% reduced 360 still costs 400$.
Prices are too high in Europe...

I feel sorry for you! $87 for a 360 game is ridiculous... I don't even like spending $30 for used 360 games.

Good thing I don't have a 360 (yet).
And I would never buy games at gamestop.
But even at other stores 60 Euros (over 80$) are normal prices for 360, PS3 and even Wii games. Hell, they want 40 Euros (54$) for most DS games and 40-50 Euros for PSP games.

A quick question - my friend wants to know which is the best way to stand your 360. Is it so that it's upright with the harddrive on the top, or on the side so that the harddrive is on the side? We've heard conflicting info, but i imagine it's better on the side.

It's designed to go both ways, I have mine vertical. A lot of people whine about that though.

If you have it in a stable place where it's not going to get knocked over, either way is fine.

Has anybody here played lost planet? If so, can I have your opinion on it?

i have and i think its amazing....even online.

I love the game, but I know others that aren't so fond of it. The biggest down side of the game is that it starts out slow. But if you have the patience, it pays off.

Now Multi-player is awesome too. But once I get the last two achievements for it, I'll probably never play it online again. I'm still trying to beat it on EXTREME for the last of four achievements I need for this game.

That'd be me.

I'll admit that it did pick up slightly, but it's still an annoying, slow, piece of crap.

Multiplayer is solid, but I'm not much of a V.S. MP player.

Check out for other's thoughts, be sure to read the complaints too, I generally try to deal, but in this case, they're game-breakingly bad.

It should be noted that even one of the best reviews advises skipping the story, which is sound adVice, as it tries to be all Metal Gear Solid, but ends up failing miserably.

If you're looking for a mindless shooter, pick up Earth Defense Force 2017. The objectives are clear, if it moves, kill the shit out of it. the hilarious part though, is that you'll spend more time strategizing in EDF than you will in Lost Planet.

I still say you should give it more of a chance. Try getting to level 4 on EXTREME, I guarantee you will like it more, or at least see that its not all just wandering around in the snow.

On a side note, I *OMFG I SWEARED* LOVE MY XBOX360!!!! I have been playing the shit out of it lately and now I don't know how I could ever live without it. Just had to get that out

So I can experience more of the whole get knocked over repeatedly, unable to move gameplay feature? pass.

Good, you've seen the light.

I want to see the light, too.
Problem is I don't like games involving war, shooting (1st person shooters to be precise) and sports (incl. racing and beat-em ups).
That quite narrows down the "great games" list.

Are there any good platformers or RPGs (except Blue Dragon and Oblivion) that would make the 360 a good purchase for me?

And I fear the red ring of death...

At the time I'm more drawn to the PS3, because all the games are region free there, which would allow me to get games from all regions for one console... Most games on 360 are locked again, which is kind of a bad thing.
Unfortunately it's the same with the Wii. That's why I still don't own one...

I hear you on the sport games, manuel, but games that involve shooting and/or war is what I live for.

Wow... Your missing out on a lot of good games

I know these are "good" from a technical standpoint, but I don't like the genre, so they aren't good for me.
That's too bad. I guess it would be great if I liked shooters and stuff.
I think my gaming taste is more "Japanese" style. RPGs and the likes.

Eternal Sonata (Trusty Bell in Japan) looks like a solid entry from Namco, the demo was good fun.

Platformers... Kameo is decent, not great. Lego Star Wars II could be considered a platformer I suppose.

While that is an issue, it's not near as big as it's made out to be. The internets are made up of the vocal minority, unfortunately.

They may all be region free, but you can pretty much choose from Resistance (FPS) or Motorstorm (Racing) aside from those, the machine has nothing at this point in time. I can't even think of any non-shooters that are coming up.

Most games on 360 are locked again, which is kind of a bad thing.
Unfortunately it's the same with the Wii. That's why I still don't own one...

Most, yes, but there are a lot that are region free, play asia has a nice list.

I think i'll try to rent Lost Planet, there's a lot of mixed opinion over it...

I'm pretty into my 360 at the moment also, i've been playing alot of Virtua Tennis 3. I'm happy with my purchase, but I plan on picking up the Wii and a PS3 (when it's cheaper) when I graduate.

I've seen pics of Eternal Sonata and I must say those look very good.

That's very true. But still, there aren't many complaints about dead Wiis and PS3s around (yet), so I guess the biggest problems are with the 360.

Well, I guess the time I will be able to buy a new machine, there will be more good games justifying a purchase. For now neither the PS3 nor the 360 have enough games for me. I only buy consoles when I'm sure I can at least buy 10-15 good games for it.

I have a question, I'm really wanting to buy my own 360. So I was thinking I would like to get the Elite but I don't have HDMI But the 120 GIG Hard Drive does sound pretty nice. Should I go for the Elite or just get the older model 360? Just Wondering any adVice would help.
Maybe the Older model 360+120 GIG Hard Drive could be cheaper then the Elite? If it turns out to be the same price I will just grab the Elite.

If you plan to download a lot then a bigger HDD makes sense.
And if the price is ok, go for the Elite.
On the other hand it also depends on what color you prefer.

Maybe the Older model 360+120 GIG Hard Drive could be cheaper then the Elite?

Thats a no. It would be more expensive to go that way. I'd say your better off going for the Elite, at least that is what I would do if I could.

The Elite comes packaged with an HDMI cable and the standard composite/component hybrid cable, you're fine by buying the Elite Aaron. $50 more than the Premium bundle in Canada. Good deal.

I love my 360. It's the main reason for me selling off most of my stuff a few months ago. And the dislike I have grown for Nintendo in general lately.

Oh, Lost Planet is the worst game I've played on the 360 so far, and I have played a lot of games. I didn't even finish the story mode for the achievements...

Jesus Nesmaster 45444 gamerscore...

But the 120 GIG Hard Drive does sound pretty nice. Should I go for the Elite or just get the older model 360? Just Wondering any adVice would help.
Maybe the Older model 360+120 GIG Hard Drive could be cheaper then the Elite? If it turns out to be the same price I will just grab the Elite.

The pricing on the 360 bundles works sort-of like this...

Core + hard drive = price of bundle.

But the bundles come with heaps of other things.

So the Elite is the best deal going, especially in Canada. I'll be buying one when they switch 'em over to the 65nm CPU process. Largely for the HDMI, I was really excited about that, because the VGA on the 360 was more clean, but the colours weren't great. That has since been fixed, and the VGA output is incredible.

I was wondering, is the backwards compatability with original xbox games any good?

Depends on the game. From my experience:

Mercenaries - Broken. Game freezes like every 5 minutes. And when it doesn't, the map on the HUD goes all glitchy. It's too bad cause it's flawless otherwise, and better looking than the PS2 version.

Red Dead Revolver - Broken. Too many graphical glitches.

GTA 3/Vice City - Works? At least I think so, but the controls seemed off to me the last time I played them.

Black - Works. Flawlessly from what I remember.

GTA San Andreas - Works. Very few, small graphical glitches during cutscenes, otherwise great.

I hear several of the games on the "working list" do not work at all past the title screen. My guess is to search for any game on the list that interests you to see if you can find any concerns.

While that is an issue, it's not near as big as it's made out to be.

You still feel that way, Nibbert?

I always wanted to try that. Thanks nesmaster for the assist.

lawl.

I lose.

Or rather, MS loses...

Luke it's simple. Gave me your 360.
