The official PS3 thread

In Modern Systems

Feel free to post everything concerning the PS3 like pricing speculation and rants in here and not in other topics if possible.

Have fun discussing.

I'm rather hesitant. Other than MGS4, it doesn't look like it has any spectacularly stellar games. Ooh! 99 Nights! Just trample all over the Dynasty Warriors playground, why don't you? And Sony's keeping tight-lipped about the really interesting games, like the one where the crazy guy thinks he's in the crusades.

It's competitor, the 360 has a very interesting lineup, and Bioware's Mass Effect is looking like it'll leave KOTOR in the dust, which Hooked me more than MGS4 would.

As I've been saying, we'll all need to wait until all three consoles come out before we start judging, but it's looking like the PS3 is lagging at the start...

At least we know what the game play has to offer and some tech specs. The revolution has hardly showed anything. It's just trying to keep it under wraps so it can come in with a bang I suppose. All we know is the ridiculous controller and the console. We have seen NO game play, nothing! I've already lost interest.

Ps3 baby

Admit it, you also haven't seen gameplay of PS3 games, right?

Quite a Sony fanboy? And that on a Nintendo-related site?

Admit it, you also haven't seen gameplay of PS3 games, right?

Hah heh.

He's right you know. there's been no IN GAME shots from the PS3... "OH BUT KILLZONE 2 WAS SHOWN AT E3, SONY SAID IT WAS IN GAME!!11!1!!!!" Yeah, but nVidia said that Sony didn't have their graphics chip then, so guess what...? Sony lied, as they always do.

I couldn't really care less about the PS3

I'd really love to have a PS3, for MGS4 specifically. I don't generally like to get a system for just one game, but I love that series. I'm just frightened of what the price may be. Sounds like it will be alot from speculation. I guess we'll see... man, am I tired of hearing/saying that

The only things I've seen of the PS3 are the 'Metal Gear Solid 4' trailer and that thing where they remade the intro to 'Final Fantasy VII' (supposedly done in real-time on PS3 hardware).
They look great... and that's all I can say.

I really have no other opinions of this console yet. It's "wait and see" time.
Simple as that.

Yes... supposedly...

Like ZEN said, it's wait and drink tea. ... (That's a German saying, do you also say it in English, or something similar... just curious)

I won't judge any console before it's out any more.

Here's my conspiracy theory (which I'm about) Perhaps PS3 and the Revolution are the same console?
I saw that in a dream (no kidding) and I was shocked!

hahah, the PSR? sounds pretty sweet

$500?

Less than I expected

The PS3 could prove to be a good console. I would maybe like to own it at some point, but for now, the revolution is the highest priority for me.

Dammit, I want to see some hard info. All of this speculating is driving me nuts.

That's all anyone can really do right now. Nintendo nor Sony has released any hard proof of everything people are talking about. I was in the game stop the other day and this guy was having a discussion with the clerk saying all this junk about the revolution. He supposedly has "isside sources". I call bs.

How much do you want to bet that each company is waiting for the other one to talk first?

$500

$500
You realize you're Contradicting that, right?

Check this link out;

it didn't like the closed linking thing.

Qoute-
"We are absolutely delighted that we will be able to bring PS3 to gamers in Europe and Australia before Christmas," said David Reeves, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

"This is an exciting first for Europe, and is a huge endorsement and vote of confidence in the strength of the European market and its importance globally."

i.e "it'll be nearly christmas, lots of kids will want one, we stand to make more releasing it then" how strategic.

I just heard the news on the TV.

Look at it this way, it gives us all time to save up the money (since I'm sure the asking price will either be an arm, leg or first born child).

Sony said a lot about PSP, too and then didn't release it at the promised date...

I'll believe a simultaneous world launch when I see it. I remember Nintendo promising the N64 would be released in Europe by the end of 1995. It eventually arrived in March 1997. I get the feeling this is just spin. Remember how the Dreamcast suffered because a lot of people were "waiting for the PS2". I'm sure Sony hope the same thing will happen with the 360. My bet is that Japan will still get it first, followed by North America. Then Europe will get it sometime around 2014.

I'm positive it will arrive before 2014. Perhaps.

But I'm not sure about a worldwide simultaneous launch. If they can produce 1 million units per month that won't be enough for all fanboys and video game magazines and the people with enough money, who buy it only as a status symbol. I think it will sell like mad in Japan and America, that's why we Europeans will surely have to wait longer. (Not that I'm waiting) They promised Europe PSPs soon, but we had to wait, what, 1 year or so? That was ridiculous.
IMO Europe will be ripped off again in many ways. At least we will pay the highest price for it. As we do for every single console.

Looks like the PS3 runs Linux.

Also looks like they're trying to do way too much with it.

Although I have no interest in sony... I hope they pull through, if only to keep microsoft and nintendo on their toes, and I'd feel bad for all the Playstation gamers if they didn't deliver.

That and the hope the rumor the FF VII remake will happen, though I know it won't.

This means no work for all the guys who try to put Linux on everything that has a CPU.
Speaking of that I saw a little cartoon today, which has a bit to do with this. I know it's stupid, but it made me smile for a second or two.

But hey, now new groups can emerge.
"Windows on PS3"!!11!

that cartoon is pretty funny

Yeah, it is funny alright.
Personally, I couldn't give a f**k if it works for Sony or not. They have their other products to fall back on, and it will sell on name alone anyway.

Yea that was a funny cartoon

If you mean the penguin on his T Shirt, it is the Linux logo/mascot.

I don't know about the US, but here in Europe the penguins have been popular for quite a while.

OMG GUIES A PS3 "Screenshot" from a game called Daragon something w00t

Very very interesting... I see strategic commands there.

OMG guys A PS3 "Screenshot" from a game called Daragon something w00t

I thought that "game" was called Lair. Stupid Sony, they think slapping a HUD on a pre-rendered image makes it real

Well, at least they're being open about it. If they were really trying to be sneaky, they would have added more to the screenshot.

I thought that "game" was called Lair. Stupid Sony, they think slapping a HUD on a pre-rendered image makes it real

My bad, it is. I've no idea where I got the Dragon thing from, probably the picture.
I'm really skeptical about the shot, and i'll continue to be until I play it myself.

Wow... Sony held their E3 conference this evening.

We have:

(no, it's not motion sensing, just tilt.) I hope you like playing with the controller perfectly centred and still while you press those buttons.

If any of you fanboys STILL want this turd, I think you'd be better off spending the $700 on some psychiatric help.

Second that.
Who in the world could still want that crap?

The cheaper model is shit and the model with the "best" configuration is too damn expensive.
They'll ask 599 Euro in Europe, that's a whopping 720 US-$!

And in one way they ripped of Nintendo, too (among others). I think this tilt technology was already used in some GBC and GBA games before.

Well, it's very funny to read some fanboys' statements ("MSG4 olone justifies spending 599$" (and 79$ for the game )) on forums.

But there are other nice comments, too. One I liked is this one:
Sony fanboys {insert foot}
yea thats right, back in nov.05 a world wide launch was stupid, a core and premium console package was worse, xbox live was a joke, and the "rev-mote" was a gimmick. so...
how do you like you xStation Wii?

Well.....the $599 model is 322 GBP, more than an premium 360 and presumably more than the revolution. But, of course, they'll sell the PS3 for more than 322 GBP.
Of course, there's the losers saying you're getting a next gen DVD player, but nobody really knows if Blu-Ray or HD DVD will prevail. I'm going to be buying "normal" DVD for a while yet anyway.
Of course, the PS3 will sell loads anyway.
I upset a Sony fan boy a while back. He said I shouldn't have got a 360 and should have waited for the PS3. Well i told him I didn't want one, and thought it was likely to be a pile of s***, he practically started crying, and looked very upset. Ha.

I've been leaning toward getting the Nintendo for a long time, and this just confirmed it for me. I'm still upset over the fact that the , well, the earlier models, had trouble with dual-layer DVD's.
Buh-bye, Sony. You won't be seeing any more $$ from this dude.

I thought Sony was going with that Boomerang Controller? This controller looks the same as the Dualshock 2?

They may have changed it as people were mocking it and calling it a space dildo. Or, more likely, they wanted to steal, then crappyify, Nintendo's idea.
But according to some n00b on Joystiq, Sony have "stolen the show"

Yeah i think $600 is to much for a videogame system especially when you can get games that look the same on a $400 360.

I thought when I spent the $300 on a PS2 the price was excessive. $700?!?!?! That's almost what I used to pay for one month's rent!
If I win the lottery, sure, I'd shell out the money. Until then, hell no.

Well, don't get too frazzled about $300, it's looking like the Wii is launching at $249...

These are just speculations... very plausible ones, but still just speculations.
And even for 249$ it wouldn't be too expensive. I'm sure the price will drop fast, after the early adopters got their's.

The way things are going it looks like you'll be able to buy a 360 and a Wii for about the same price as a PS3. 2 consoles for the price of 1.

oooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh burn!

yeah, i think Sony is going to push themselves out of the gaming market.

oooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh burn!

yeah, i think Sony is going to push themselves out of the gaming market.

Hey, It was bound to happen sooner or later. I wonder if the big N will reclaim the the throne like it did in the mid 80s to at least the mid 90s? I wouldnt mind seeing it that is for sure. PS3 at near 700$ eh...That is pretty insane. I might have second thoughts and get the Wii instead.

Sony are such bozo's. But the bigger bozo is the bozo that pays too much for the ridiculously overpriced garbage as it's a playstation

Garbage....

No memory cards?!?! Oh, what a piece of crap. Either version. I am definitely going with Nintendo, even a speculation of $249 is better than what Sony's price is going to surely be.

it has a 20GB HDD, practically infinite save storage.

The prices are already confirmed as well.

$499 for the crap model

$599 for the useful, but much too expensive to ever buy model.

How much do you think PS3 games are gonna cost?

an even $70

(This maybe a dumb question/ I don't know if I was reading the above wrong)

The hard drive is removable.

Really?? No sh*t, Sherlock.

(This maybe a dumb question/ I don't know if I was reading the above wrong)

The hard drive is removable.

But how big physically is the hard drive? Can you have two hard drives Hooked up to move information (or how would one copy save games/stats from one hard drive to another? Are they hot swappable, if you copy a save game to memory and to another hard drive)? Are the hard drives lap top (3.5") size or "regular" size?
The memory cards were just so convienent because they fit in the game case.

Laptop size is 2.5"

I doubt they're hot swappable, they probably are laptop size.

If you want memory cards that badly, you'll have to shell out the extra $100. Of course we don't even know what can access what drives... memory cards may only be usable to copy photos/music and such from a camera or MP3 player.

Anyway, Sony has announced the game above. It seems pretty...odd. I'm not sure how well it will work. Any thoughts?

Well, if they market it right in Japan, the otaku will go crazy over it. Other than that... no. Just, no. The large majority of american consumers wouldn't be caught dead with that.

Maybe they could aim it at Live-Action Roleplayers and Everquest addicts.

(This maybe a dumb question/ I don't know if I was reading the above wrong)

You can bring your HDD over (which is very nice... not), or maybe they'll make something along the lines of "send your save to your friend" or something like that. Either way, memory cards would be better or maybe they let you put saves on USB sticks?

Especially when the high-end model is $805 over there.

800$... that's nearly half a year's rent for my room in Munich...

The PS3 was officially delayed to March 2007 in Europe!

They say it's due to manufacturing problems with the BluRay diodes.
That's good for: Nintendo, Microsoft, HD-DVD companies
That's bad for: Sony

Sony already has a very bad reputation in Europe and with that move it won't be getting any better. We get ripped off in Europe anyways with a price of over 800$ (!!! you can buy a used car for that price!) and then they delay it a whopping 4 months... Not that I would mind.

They still say PS3 will release on time in the US and Japan, but I wouldn't wonder if they delayed that too a bit.

Sorry, but the source is in German.

Edit: Germany's biggest electronic store chain "Media Markt" had a leaflet in all major newspapers last week stating that you "only get a PS3 on November 17th if you preorder fast" and give 'em a downpayment of 50 Euro (over 60$, nice interest-free loan for them, eh?) in advance.
I wonder how many stupid kids went there and laid down their 50 only to know soon that they'll have to wait 4 months longer.

Sony's response to the delay:

Thing is the PS3 will probably outsell the 360 and Wii in the UK whatever Sony does because... there are a lot of idiots here.

Yes, but there's still hopes that the older idiots will be too cheap, and that the parents of the child idiots will slap them for wanting something so damn expensive.

I don't think very many parents would shell out 600$/800$(in Europe) for a game machine. That price is just hilarious, no matter how much "value" you get for it.

edit:
Wow. The PS3 delay made it to the evening new on (at least) 2 stations.

Nintendo stock = win

Sony stock = warnk

Oh, the delay isn't the only bad news today.

AND, Looks like BAD NEWS.

I don't care about resolution that much, but that's a lot of broken promises from Sony.
Till now haven't they broken every single promise they made? (Except one, the high price. )

Revive the old thread!

Japanese store chain "Don Quijote" (cool stores, I loved to go there after classes) sells 20GB PS3s with "20% off", resulting in a price of 39800 Yen, or 328US$/385CAD/253Euro/166 British Pounds.

Would you buy one for that price?
I would NOT, because there isn't a single game out that would interest me. Nor is one announced. FF13 might be nice, but I don't like where the FF series is heading... too much FMVs. I prefer Dragon Quest in every aspect, even if graphics are clearly worse.
No games on PS3 for my taste...

Wii also doesn't have many good games yet, but at least there are some out that catch my interest.
I've played and enjoyed Wii Sports, Zelda, Rayman and Wario Ware. Apart from that Super Monkey Ball and Elebits look interesting. (That's all from my personal viewpoint of course) From the announcements for this year Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Dragon Quest Swords and Crystal Chronicles sound very promising...
The 360 has about 2-3 games I'm interested in. Blue Dragon, Oblivion and Kameo perhaps. Not enough yet to make me want it...

I would, and play t out of my 10" tube TV with RF connection.

Get 'em Luke!

Get 'em Luke!

Oh, he knows how I feel about his TV setup, but he has an audio setup that far surpasses mine.

Can you even connect a PS3 via RF? Just wondering...
I'd have to play it on a 15" TV set... Not too spectacular, too.

I have no idea, it was a blatant joke.

I have seen an RF adaptor for XBOX360... If there isn't one for PS3 already, there probably will be one soon.

The PS3 has the standard Playstation AV jack on it, so you can use an RF adapter from the PS1 if you so felt the need.

That's convenient.
At least they are thinking of the people who still use old TVs.

That's convenient.
At least they are thinking of the people who still use old TVs.
Even though anybody thinking of getting a PS3 to play it on a RF only TV should be sodomized brutally with a large diameter object for several days. Priorities!

Nice one.
I wonder how many of the PS3 owners have that setup running...

Nice one.
I wonder how many of the PS3 owners have that setup running...

First let see how many PS3 owners there are.

A look at my signature says 1.71 million. (If that's correct)

I believe most owners have HD sets. Why afford such an expensive console and not a TV set that can display HD graphics?

Oh yeah, European PS3 release news:
The first 500,000 gamers who register their consoles on the PlayStation Network will get a copy of the BluRay disc "Casino Royale". That's way better than the US pack-in Talladega Nights, but still can't make up for the huge markup Europeans are going to pay.

And how many of those PS3's ended up on Ebay? Or returned to the store?

The PS3 wasn't released in Europe yet.
It's March 23 afaik.

I guess there will be a lot of consoles on eBay when it comes out.
But that's not the problem. You only get the movie when you register with the Playstation network. It's not a pack-in.

Penny Arcade makes $13,200 finding PS3's, takes up SCEA Presidents 'bet'

---

first, an interview in EGM.

he says he'll pay anyone $1,200 per PS3 they can find sitting on a store shelf for more than 5 minutes.

so Gabe and Tycho take him up on the offer, and here are the results:

took them 1 hour, a couple stores, 11 consoles. As of yesterday they had 8 just chillin, man that would be mad bank

The problem is the interview was about a month before the Penny Arcade thingy.
The guy said something stupid, but he was saying that to the interviewer, not to Gabe and Tycho. If they want that money they have to interview Tretton again and make him say the same words again.
BTW, he said he'd give him 1200 for a PS3. But of course you'd have to buy all the PS3s first, so if you include tax you won't even get 600$ per console for him, let alone 1200. It's a logical mistake by PA. Think about it.

I read the latest EGM on Monday, and this was the cover story. It was a huge multiple-page article with EGM constantly cutting them down about the negativity surrounding the console and the broken promises with this guy here performing a laughable cocky defensive effort.

"I've played a lot of games that had a vibration feature, and it personally wasn't all that compelling to me. We feel that vibration is not part of our future."

How would they get female players to play without vibration?
...
Sorry, that HAD to be said.

Now seriously... that guy's a moron who's not in touch with the real world any more. Only my 2 cents.
If he feels rumble is not necessary, that's one thing. But thousands of people in message forums (=potential customers) would love rumble. What do you choose, Sony?

Today I had a chance to lay hands on a PS3. (Man is that thing heavy)
I played Virtua Tennis in a store, on a 70" Full-HD panel.
It sure looks nice. Great graphics, no question.
Some time in the future I'll make sure to buy a HD panel, but not yet.
I still prefer Wii Tennis though. I'm not that much of a Tennis game fanatic.

so about a week ago, my brother bought a PS3, i dont know why....

anyways, i thought id take it over and play Gran Turismo 4, with the wheel,
as we have a large tv that supports 1080p.

i go in game, thinking, this doesnt look any different.
so i go into the options, i change it to 1080...

looked almost worse,

all the textures really blowed.

it looked kinda like auto Modellista but a little less cartoony.

Perhaps it's better to try a PS3 game for the really good graphics.
What games did your brother get with the console?

none yet, but we're borrowing resistance and virtua fighter.

he mainly got it, because of Metal Gear solid 4, but thats not exclusive anymore, except i bet he would want to play it as soon as he can.
because the 360 version is supposed to come out later.

im gonna wait for the 360 one, because i think that VR Missions are almost the best about Metal Gear.

It appears that a cut price model is to appear in Europe:

£300 with a 40 gig HD but no backwards compatability......still, this may bring me one step closer to buying one, as they are now at a more resonable price.
What do you guys think? Is this going to help sony at all?

Usually HDD sizes go UP with the time. But Sony doesn't bother.

I'd be ok with 40GB, too, but what I don't understand is why the new model won't have backwards compatibility.
I mean, it's only software, right? How would it hurt them to insert the software?

And with the time people might get confused with all the different versions of hardware around.

If I buy one I'll get a Japanese one with BC.

They claim removing it was a way of keeping costs down. Also, as 65 new games were coming out it's not needed (or some words to that effect) they've been criticised on Kotaku and the sort for being hypocritical over it, as Sony said before it was important to them.

Even so, i'm strongly considering getting this model. It'll suit me well, I already have a PS2 although it needs a controller, memory card etc.

Caucasian PS3 For Japan:

The PS3 Song:

That white PS3 looks nice, but somehow I wanted PS2 compatibility AND card slots, which both are gone with this System.
My god, Sony. I'd buy your stuff in Japan, but you make it so hard for me. Now you're at an acceptable price (39980Yen), have the colour I like, but the features don't look too lovely to me.

Usually HDD sizes go UP with the time. But Sony doesn't bother.

You can just replace the hard drive with any off-the-shelf 2.5" SATA drive.

Apparently the back compatibility was still using the graphics chip from the PS2, and the CPU was being emulated on the PAL machines, and the North American 80GB. The new model has ALL PS2 hardware removed. Glad I got my 60 when I did.

I was concerned about the new PS3 had no card slots, but now I read on an amazon (Japan) customer's review that you can plug in any USB stick and load data from there. That would save me from buying Sony Memory Sticks.
Is that true?

If so, I might get a white 40GB model around next year's Christmas or so.
I don't know why, but I love white consoles.

As I don't plan on selling my PS2 I also don't REALLY need the backwards compatibility.

Looks like the 40GB is official for North America, and the price is actually semi-accurate between Canada and the US, if my understanding of the press release is correct.

Also, the 80GB is dropping to $499 in both the US and Canada, again, accurate pricing pleases me.
