New 2D system: Would it work?

In Modern Systems

As we all know, 3D rules the day and 2D games are few and far between in the gaming world. Handheld too is quickly losing the 2D genre, and I'm only hoping something can save it. I would like to see an all 2D system used specifically for optimal 2D games. 3D systems are made for 3D play, while a 2D system's hardware would be built specifically for that purpose. This is probably just one more "if only", but honestly...what's stopping them?

Pros
1. 2D games tend to be easier to make and easier to store on a single CD.
2. A system for this would be relatively inexpensive compared to consoles (especially the Next-Gen)
3. Game costs would be less as fewer developers would be needed for a shorter period of time.
4. Great opportunity to flood the market with gotta-have-em games.
5. Odds are faster, better systems wouldn't need to be produced saving money on R&D.

Cons
1. No market from those who play nothing but 3D (you know who they are)
2. No 3D graphics.
3. May not be able to play with the "Big Dogs" of the market.

So what do you guys think? Would a 2D system survive in today's economy, or would it turn into one more failed system?

I for one dont think anyone would buy it. 95% of younger kids are into playstation one graphics and up. you put them down in front of a TV w/ a 2-D game, I bet they'd just look at you like you just smoked 12lb. of Meth and 5oz. of Hydro and drank three 5ths of Vodka.

What he said ^

I would buy it if it looked promising, though.

Actually, their anti-drug program would have them thinking you might have had a single cigarette.

hahaha!

Yeah, that would be sweet if such a thing were to come out. Games like CV: SotN... with REALLY good backgrounds and such. Man, it would be awesome. I know it wouldn't survive, because of reasons stated already, but we can dream.

The system would die and become worth money to collectors only.

Immediately upon reading the subject of the thread I thought of GBA.
Then I thought why not a company simple produce only 2D games.
Then I thought of Alien Hominid and all the games that would be coming out would be awful because you if nothing but 2D was expected from developers all those crummy shockwave and flash games would get slapped on a compilation disc and "Great opportunity to flood the market with" god awful, no-production value games.

The optimistic me says, it would be nice that games would be developed for it, and that you would never need a new system. Because expectations are lower.

The developers would be paying more to keep the system down from 3D. It's like saying why not just build cars that can't go above the speed limit so that speeding isn't as much a problem. Well, it would cost more to build the engines down and inhibit innovation and less competition.

It wouldn't have to be a new console. The current consoles can handle 2D gaming with no problem. It's a matter of whether or not the developers want to take a chance of producing something that's considered "outdated" and will not appeal to the likes of "Generation Halo".

On the other hand, if there was a new 2D side-scrolling 'Karnov' specifically for some new "2D only" system, I would be the first in line for it.

i would buy it if it were to have Good games on it.

To me that be the best idea. But to the masses and society...no. It wouldnt survive long considering how the playstation and n64 era of kids wont buy it and the fact of casual gamers wouldnt get it as well most likley. A shame really. But as a poster above said. We can at least dream.

It would sell about as muhc as the Gamecube did.

I don't think so. I wish it would. But there are to many Fanboys/Fangirls out there that want GRAPHICS! I really don't care for that. I would love to see a new 2D system I would buy it.

I don't think it would work either it would be nice if it did.

It would lose money. I wouldn't care for it though, because they can just make great 2D games for the DS.

it would lose money, but i would buy it, i love 2-D. i haven't like 3-D that much, but now that the graphics are getting betetr and better, it is actually really good. like mario party 1, i thought has worse graphics than 2-D games, just because it looks really pointy and looked like they were made of just a bunch of shapes.

i don't think it'd be anywhere near as popular as the systems already out. BUT it might get some sales for the people that play alot of GBA games. most GBA games are 2D. i doubt it'd catch on as much as the GBA, but i'm sure it'd bring in some money

Yea, I really do think its success would depend on the developers in the end. If we can get big names such as Capcom, SNK, Konami, etc... If it had its own dev kit distributed free that would be a bonus, considering the success (small scale, nonetheless significant) gained from the GP32. I figure it all depends if it becomes a shitty pay flash mashine or a monstrous little devil with big name support...

I think a better way than a whole new system would be to convince Nintendo to start making NES Games again. Screw all the GBA remakes. Speaking of which, I saw Best Buy carrying 8-tracks a few years ago. No joke.

As cool as it would be to have a new 2-D console, I don't think it would fly very well at all. Everyone now a days is in to 3-D games (except us ) like Halo, and other such ones. The only market that a 2-D system would have would be small children, for which the new consoles are to difficult.

Alot of games today are hell of a lot easier than NES/2d games.

What I mean is young kids have a hard time controlling the new 3-D games. After I got my first PS1 I had trouble controlling them, being that I was so used to 2-D. I've seen a 2 year old playing SMB (well, if playing is what you want to call it). I'm just saying that 2-D games are easier to control, not the simplicity of the games.

i still have a hard time controlling some 3D games. games like halo mess me up so bad.

Me too. I takes me forever to figure out the controls for a 3-D game, even the most simple. I love 2-D.
