Starting Dragon Warrior

In Games

Im thinking of starting on the Dragon Warrior games on nes. My question is that do they all take place after each other? Or do the games take place on different planets such as Final Fantasy? And last but not least! are the games any fun? Any input would be nice, thanks.

The first two 'Dragon Warrior' games take place on the same world (they're the only ones I've played). 'Dragon Warrior II' is twice the size of the original and you get to revisit the original game's island (which has the exact dimensions of the first game).
Don't know about the rest of the series.

The stories aren't directly related (no reaccuring characters or events that I remember), but the games still have that familiar (not different) feel to them.

Fun? Maybe "fun" isn't the best word. More like "monotonous".
There is that sense of accomplishment though, if you can forgive the dull combat and "leveling up" (I can't).

Well i currently started the first and second game. Man the first one is tough!!. I cant even fiqure out to equip items!. How do you equip btw?

To equip items you simply buy them. They'll be equipped, you'll have the chance to sell your old item (which, I guess you should do) and thats it.

I actually like the way Dragon Warrior I equips / manages your items.

I actually tried going through DW again recently. It was the first RPG I ever beat (one of the ONLY ones, actually), and I wanted to see if it still held up. I think it's a fun game but yeah: Levelling up sucks.

I haven't beat it yet. I have all the best stuff, and I'm wandering around in the last guy's castle levelling up, because I'm a little lost. Haven't played for a couple weeks. Sometime I'll have to sit down, find my way through the castle and finish it.

Yeah, I must agree that it is a fun game but leveling up is way too tedious and unnecessary

I started on DW 1, but I never finished it, I ended up using the Game Genie to get some levels because it was so tedious

I really need to fire it up again and see what it's like if I play honestly.

I want to play it, but the games are around 40 bucks each.

Yikes

I got my Dragon Warrior I for $3.33 (3 NES Games for $10).

Where? I downloaded the NES ROM, and love the game.

I have two copied of the first one, I got one copy for free, and the other copy was about $3 CDN

I envy you Luke. . (jk)

The first Dragon Warrior sells about the same as your average cart, while II thru IV are quite a bit more expensive. While I doubt finding II-IV for a deal is possible, the first one isn't too hard to come by.

yeah, that's how it seems to be, I've never even seen a DW II-IV cart in the wild...

Well, I went looking for Dragon Warrior, and I found one for 5.99. I think I'll pick a copy up soon.

I've seen 'Dragon Warrior IV' COMPLETE sell for over $90.00 (USD). Is it really worth that much?
I've never looked into the reason why, but it's one of (if not THE) most sought after NES game.

I think it's probably the most expensive NES cart, not counting the Panesian games.

It's worth as much as people are willing to pay for. I'm sure there will be some people who also pay 90$. I wouldn't.

The most I would ever pay for a NES game is....35-40, and that is really streching it for me.

Kind of crazy to think how much new games cost now. Like $60 for one game, while an average NES game costs $4 and less. I'm quite suprised you want to limit these games from you because of cost, as only 6 or so official games are more expensive now then they were when they were first released. Just consider how willing you are to buy a new XBOX game or whatever as compared to NES.

Never thought of it that way. Good point.

How long do you think it should take me to be able to finish Dragon Warrior? I really love long games and try to take my time on them.

I played Dragon Warrior 1 when I was 9 years old, and it took me about 1 month to finish DW. A year later I got DW 4 and it took me about 45 days. 3 months to finish DW 7(200hours of game play).

i had a great time playing DW1 all the time when i was nine (remember, the only rpgs you had to chose from back then was the legend of Zelda, Ultima Exodus, Metal Gear, DW1 and weird/shitty quest games like Faxanadu). you might have some fun on it (DW1), but it's pretty dated by todays standards and it's boring only controlling one character and fighting monsters one at a time

in DW2 you're the heir of the hero from the first game and you pick up two more companions in a much bigger world and visit a little miniature version of the land from the first one.

i don't remember DW3 that well. if memory serves, it takes place years before the first game. maybe you play Edrick or maybe it takes place before him, i don't recall. anyway, you meet kids that are old men in the first game, there's a night cycle and you have a lot of control over what kind of party you form and their character classes.

in DW4 you're introduced to four characters and spend most of the game taking them through their overly simple little quests one at a time before they all get together and actually kick some ass by the end of the game (or so i hear). i never played #4 that much. after taking two or three of the characters through their little quests i got sick of it and gave the game back to my friend so i could have my copy River City Ransom back. maybe it does get better at the end of the game, but DW2-3 were always my favorites.

I like how the world is so far. Non linear and lots of fun exploration to do. Good game!

Ah... Dragon Warrior. I can still play the first one and be happy. I think it's more of a nostalgic thing, but I even like the drumless music! It's especially cool how the music slows down the deeper you go into a dungeon. Every now and then I pick that game out of my collection and play through it. I may have to do that again.

I have one nit pick though. See i wasnt really into RPGS untill 95. (Thank chrono trigger for that). So all those battles where you die frequenlty and restart in the town you start in can be kind of cumbersom. But i love a challenge and DW delivers. Cant wait to try the others.
