gamepad/emulator problems

In Emulators / NES ROMs

I dug out my n and plugged it into the gameport on the back of my computer. i loaded up FCE ultra, and it didnt even seem to support gamepads..? then i tried various other emulators with crappy results untill i downloaded think Jnes and when i configured everything (up/y+ etc) everything worked, except the LEFT D-pad button. I configured LEFT to be on the DOWN D-pad, and t worked. i dont know why the left one dosnt work. i cleaned the connectors, and even cut the plastic out from the connectors so it would go in deeper. i also took it apart and it was totally clean and everrthing looked alright. heres a pic of the gamepad (its pretty old model)

You can use a gamepad with FCE Ultra. Go to the "config" menu then choose "joysticks". As for the left Dpad not working I don't know. If it doesn't work with FCE either then I guess it's a faulty pad.

From the description I'd say it's the pad's fault. Maybe a broken wire or something?

i'd say mod a real snes pad for pc.. i did..

I've had that exact same gamepad before...seems like there where some little black switches, one on top and one on the bottom. I had trouble with it on Mame seems like...then realized that pushing the switches around reverses directions on the pad, and reconfigues the button numbers or something. If it's got those I'd see what happens by messing around with them.

yeah ive tried every possible combo with those damned black switches. they where supposed to make it "user friendly" for left handed people.. when you switch them, the up and right work, while the left and bottom dont. so ill just get a new one...

ALRIGHT,im scrapping this peice of garbage. can anyone recomend any good brands or models for pc USB gamepads? and how do those playstation-style Gamepads feel with NES Games? im icking on up tommorow. im hoping radioshack, krazy krazy, or ebgames has some good ones.. i hope they arent more that 25.00

I hate to recomend Gravis again after you just had all that trouble....but they have some good Gravis gamepads at Best Buy for about 15 bucks a peice. They are USB, plug right in and Windows finds them right away. I've had a pair of them on my emu comp for about 2 years and haven't had any problem. They have four buttons on front, and four on top...I've used them with Jnes and FCE Ultra both..only game I ever had any problem with was Mike Tysons Punch-Out...was hard to dodge sometimes with the directional pad, but other than that they've been flawless far as I can tell. For 15 bucks you can't beat it.

I recommend a Tremon USB game pad.
Although there's nothing really that spectacular about it (it looks like the pre-"dual shock" era PS1 controller), I was able to get one from an eBay auction for the winning bid of $0.01 (1 cent).

The shipping cost was $10, but for $10.01 it was a good deal for something that works great for emulation (works the best with SNES emulators, but good enough for NES).

Just bought one, sounds alot like ZEN's description and Saito's. im happy with it besides the D-pad. its kind of lame. its alright though

Here is the control pad I have.

The D-pad is on a swivel, so it's not quite perfect for some NES Games (don't try the "Clinger Winger" on 'Battletoads' with it), though it get's the job done.

I would really like to get one with the dual thumbsticks. Those would be great for arcade 'Smash T.V.' or 'Robotron'.
Maybe one of those air flowy ones too. They have built in "fans" to keep your hands from getting too hot and sweaty.

Hey Z.E.N, you just described my controller to a 'T.' I have a Air Flo by Nyko. It seems to work pretty well. The ONLY problem I've had w/ it is that the D-Pad won't work in NNNesterJ. If I ever use that emu for anything, I have to use the stick. I rarely use that emu anymore because of that. Besides that, I'm really happy with it.

Oh yeah, it does keep that hands cooled down... as long as you don't have a death grip on the pad. Not too bad.

Thats almost identical to mine, except mine has different number placings on the buttons, and where yours says Tremmon, mine says nexxtech. I have the "10, 9,9, turbo, and clear. WHat do the 10 9 and 9 do??? anyways, im happy with it. played a nice long session of bible adventures yesterday. (How do you pick up the pigs in noahs ark!? )

BTW: Ive always wondered what the right analog stick is for??

Whatever your heart desires Like Z.E.N said above, it's VERY useful for games like Smash T.V. You just have to make sure while setting it up to turn your controller to the side (for two controllers on the NES, it was side by side, and both sideways).

Also, it's been utilized by some of the more cool games. Check out the game Ape Escape. It uses the right stick to the max, and in a very good way.
