wow, a lot harder than I thought
By nesking85 on 11/29/2004 1:45:51 AM
I put this in my system recently to play it again after a long time and the enormous challenge surprised the shit outta me. The way the game is cartoony with its characters and such, I would have never guessed in a million years it would be so hard. I think this is even harder than ghosts n goblins. But still a fun classic game! 8/10

Yes, this game is TOUGH. I have beaten it (some years ago), but the only way I could ever get past level 11 was using the NES Advantage controller. The joystick made it possible to take those turns and stay ahead of the fuzzball. The regular old nes controller or computer keyboard on emulator doesn't work for me, I'd get schooled right away.

I am never going to get past level 11. I barely last 5 seconds in that place. I might be able to get it with some practice, but it takes so long to get there! Unless there is some secret to it, I'm about to give up.

This is the all time greatest game for the NES. PERIOD. It has the best grahics, sound, all that good stuff. PLUS, it's difficulty adds to the replay value. It's just plain cool. Too bad they haven't remade that one for new consoles.

Very Good Game.
By Hackertnv on 11/30/2003 6:34:11 PM
This game is probably the hardest game i've ever played... Took me 6 months to beat the game.. Playing the same stage over and over which seems impossible, but with repetitive play you can get passed it... Stack up on men on level 2 by hitting the crows over and over.. The rest is up to you..

Having not played this the first time round when i was a kid, I was curious about this game after reading the reviews on here (esp. the infamous level 3). As luck would have it :) one of my mates happened to have a copy of the game so I borrowed it to see how what its like and ive got to say I havent even got past level 2 yet (only had 1 go using all continues though) so im still really lookin forward to Lvl3 :P Got to say the gameplay and controls feel almost as perfect as you could wish for, I think the FEEL of a game is a very important thing, call it the X factor if you will this game seems to have that. erm out of 10 not having played much of it mind but from what ive played so far id give it 9/10.

Battletoads is one of the best two player games ever. It's expecially fun beating up those "legs" and then mutilating your partner with the robot's severed limb. I like to throw coconuts at the giant robot-y thing. (Hit the crosshair for a one hit kill).
Level 3 IS hard because even though I can get through it, my partner would always screw up and crash and we'd have to do it over.

The magazine ads for this game did not lie, Battletoads was awesome in my book. The control and gameplay are spot-on when many NES games of this type don't do too well. Nice, colourful graphics, and lots of innovation. The first boss is fun, since you actually see from the enemy's point of view. Every level offers something a little different - very much like Earthworm Jim meets Ninja Turtles. Cool.

Level 11
By Ed on 1/21/2003 9:34:52 PM
Ok, I don't know why everyone on here says Level 3 is SOO hard. It may take a few tries, but it's not even close to Level 10 or 11. I'm stuck on Level 11, someone please reply if you can beat it.

BattleToads and the ESRB
By BombOmb on 1/11/2003 1:52:39 PM
If the ESRB were around when this game came out, I'm sure it'd get an M rating (in comparison with the other NES games) as well as its sequel. This game introduces satisfying violent acts to your enemy all throughout the game. It gives you guns, sticks, rocks and even the WWE's "throw-your-opponent-at-the-other-opponent" moves into this game. It should be bought by any gamer who enjoys a good violent and high paces action game. What I didn't like is how it suddenly towards the end went from action to reflexes. I'd much rather keep beating things up than actually have to WORK my way to the next area where I get to beat the next thing up (of course it IS more rewarding - "I'LL TEACH YOU TO HIDE ALL THE WAY UP HERE YOU RAT FACED TURKEY!"). 2 Player kicks too, you can have the option of NOT being able to beat up your friend or beating up your friend. It's so great throwing your best pal into a pit or at a herd of rats. Great action game, go buy it.

Ah...the memories!
By Radeon on 12/17/2002 3:20:16 PM
I just knew someone would mention this by now, but I guess not...Did anyone else find the warps in this game? If you got through certain parts fairly quickly, you'd see these white dots expand and contract just for a moment. If you went to them quickly enough, you'd warp to a further level. There was one in the first level, which was pretty close to the beginning. Also, there was one in the 3rd level if you made it far enough. I don't think I ever made it through the 3rd level without using that warp...very handy! There's a few more, but I can't remember them...oh yeah! There was one in the second part of the snake level. I enjoyed the snake level thoroughly though so I didn't use that one.

By gnrchild on 11/1/2002 6:51:14 PM
has anyone ever made it past level 3? it took me forever to figure out the jumping from island to island, and that turbo tunnel shit is insane. Good idea for a game though. I like that smartass buzzard. 4/5.
that's a good rating considering how nobody's seen th second half of the game. |

one the top ten most difficult games ever
By Ironman on 10/5/2002 10:04:13 AM
Battletoads is like many NES games in the fact that it has insane difficulty. Proof of this is any one who has ever gotten to level 3 of this game. There's a reason that Level 3 is called the Turbo Tunnell. Each level is different though. For example level 1 you have a life bar while level 4 you don't. Some levels are Vertical (level 2, 8, and the last level) while others are horizontal (1, 3, and 5). Than there are others where you are in a big room and have to go through that (level 4, 6, 11). The game gets progressivly difficult as you are also exposed to weird vehicle type stages (3, 5, and 11) each extremly difficult. The turbo tunnell is legendary in it's difficulty. The further down the faster it goes (trust me). To put it mildly any one who has beaten or at least made it to the last level without game genie or codes should consider themselves a game master. This is for those who desire the ultimate challenge in a game. The rest will be left in the dust.

not impossible...
By Cliff on 9/29/2002 2:45:21 PM
True, the game is very very hard (and very very awesome), but it CAN be beat, and I have done it...the key is level 2...you MUST keep hitting the birds over and over even after they're dead in order to get at LEAST 20 or so extra lives. If you can do that (AND get past level 3) then you'll be sitting pretty until level 9, which is hard as hell...can anyone else beat it, or am I the only one?

Boy are you right!!! I never got past the turbo tunnel either. Still this will go down in my captain's log as one of my all time personal favorite games. It was somewhat of a spin on the Ninja Turtle concept...mutant like man-phibians...only better playing. Sorry no toys existed (I think). They never made a sequel except for a Double Dragon team up on Super Nintendo (I thought also), which I liked but I remember my older brother scoffing at...just not enough Double Dragon...his personal favorite

Very funny game, quite challenging but not impossible as stated below. I made it to the 11th's leve nor so, but then the game got me... Like I said, it's not impossible but it's certainly one of the most dificult games on the NES. Still great fun though! I love the special moves, kicks and bumps. Rating 7.5/10

I thought id eventually finish this game!
By Wise old man on 8/4/2001 2:24:47 PM
Battletoads on the NES was a game i owned unintentionally...long story.
Battletoads overall is a great beat 'em up full of crazy and unimaginable ass kicking moves! Collect robot legs to bash your opponent or ride the waves in your toaddy surf board. If you've had a bad day play this game to unwind :)
But regardless of that Battletoads is a VERY hard game!! I can say that myself because ive never actually beaten the game and i consider myself to be a talented gamer..got to the last level but damn its a hard nut to crack!! And when i played this game on the NES game genie codes were not invented!!
If you consider yourself as a gamesmaster download this game and prove your worth!!
And then email me :)

Hardest Game Ever
By Dave on 7/25/2001 4:57:29 AM
Yeah if you can actually make it past Level 3 (I've only done it a few times myself) that's about as far as you'll get, as this has to be the most difficult game ever made for the NES, even with a bunch of game genie codes it's still a challange. Don't believe me? Download it yourself, being able to save and load at will on an emulator is the only way you're going to beat this game... besides being ridiculously difficult, it's actually a pretty fun game... worth playing up to level 3 at least.
