Greed...

In Super Mario Bros.

Now, this doesn't only concern SMB 1, but all the old Super Mario games out there. Whenever I start playing them, I feel the need to say I handle it well. I mean, I beat them easily, it's just one of those games that really was made for me, but there's just one little problem... I get too greedy. Now, I never really noticed that until some days ago. I was playing SMB 3 with some friends, and I had my mind set on beating it. One of my friends suddenly told me: "You know, Chris. You could actually do a better job if you weren't so greedy all the time. I mean you collect every single coin you find..." I thought to myself that he was right, I do... Whenever I get to those bonus stages where you either jump or climb a beanstalk up to the clouds, and if I miss one coin, the game is basically ruined for me...

I just hope I can get rid of this problem of mine...

I know what you mean there. It's one of the very clever elements of the game's design, I have it embedded in my head--"100 coins--extra man!"
Then I have to stop and ask myself, "what the hell does it matter, when it's the home version, and I know all the tricks to get extra men?"
There's just something about those shiny coins! At least it's not as bad as a friend of mine, who, every time I play a 2 player-game with him, insists on breaking every brick he can find. He's constantly running the time limits into the ground. Sometimes, I can perform household chores while the guy is playing!

Good that I don't have a problem with that. I'm very modest, so I don't have to collect all coins. Some people would call it laziness, I call it modesty.

I'm the complete opposite.
