bannings

In Off-topic

I was looking around at the buy/sell and noticed carnage got banned for admitting that he may have used bad grammar? After rereading his buy/sell/trade post I didn't find anything too out of line for internet forum postings.

Is it necessary to have all the posts on that thread? None of them have to do with the topic of the original post, buy/sell/trade.

Then I looked at the banned users thread...
So, captain rad spencer got banned for an extra 'h' in his post?
and for his "general inability to contribute anything to the forums."
I didn't know that was a ban-able offense.
I would consider the posts that copy and pasted ign reviews and posted them in the forum with a link attached as fairly useless contributions (no offense to whoever made those), although it does seem those have been on the decline.

I cannot find these rules. I figure I agreed to something in the beginning but have forgotten the 'rules' and would like a refresher. Is there a link or post for me to find them? Thanks.

Oh, and I don't intend for it to appear as though I am defending the banned. Creating a second name or something and/or fighting back isn't the way to handle it.

Perhaps you would get less "mouthy, idiots" if it were handled privately. The way Luke handled Cpt. Rad Spencer, you know, the one with the giant screenshot of the preview button edited with mspaint. That was certainly uncalled for and seems to have been trying to incite spencer in the first place. I would have thought that there would be something in the 'rules' about respecting users, especially an admin respecting users.

I think that to get this place back on track would be to limit posts to mostly NES related items. Nearly any post that qualifies as an off-topic I don't read, and I know that doesn't mean you don't read it. But there are nearly 12 thousand posts in off-topic, which is more than any other general topic. This isn't about the NES anymore, but more about 'junk and stuff.'
Perhaps you should combine all the other systems boards. Or into a classic/modern seperation.

Maybe you should talk to Luke about this. Maybe he will gave him a seventh chance.

Good point about the non-NES-relation, I myself am possibly the biggest offender in that regard.

As for Carnage and Cpt. Rad Spencer, they weren't banned for bad grammar, they were banned for absolutely refusing to even try and clean up their posts. Carnage's were barely legible whatsoever. When confronted, they were discourteous and flippant. And NES-Luke doesn't feel like putting up with that, which I agree with.

For a counter example, take Airfiggy. He can make spelling or grammar mistakes, and no one will care. Because he tries to make legible posts, and isn't trying to "speed-type".

I'm not trying to sound out of line or anything, but more gaming talk would be nice. It's good to have an off topic section (which i admit to posting in) as we get to know each other better, which is nice.
I understand i'm being slightly hypocritical here.

So far as I'm concerned, Luke has been more than fair. People were given plenty of warnings (he posted a Spring Cleaning topic well in advance), and it could have been a lot worse. 4 people banned, out of all the users we have, and, reading the posts of the banned users, they were all asking for it by being mouthy, which he warned them not to do if they were facing a ban.
And the auctionsdp or whatever he was--totally useless. The NES Files has an eBay link.

Perhaps asking Luke privately as well could help. Please don't take offense to me saying that, as I like you and your posts. I just think that it looks more like you're calling someone out, instead of actually resolving something.

God, I couldn't agree more.

No offense taken and I didn't mean any offense in the intial post.

I think that me asking for use of private messages as they were intended without using the private messaging system is hypocritical. However, I beileve that this is something that should be discussed among the community since we could all try to better the environment and be on the same page.

Whereas, the bannings and asking users to work on certain things seems like something that should be one on one since the only people who can ban are the admins and anyone else commenting may be doing more harm than good. I'm not against banning users and making the bans public at least not until after they're official.

I don't want to outcast the users who come here to chat by saying that we should stick to NES only, but at the same it is NES Files.

heh, Yeah, I actually thought about my not PMing you after posting my post... sorry dude, my bad.

Devil that cried was fair game, as he was banned when this was in effect.

That's the thing, we (the community) try to keep it from becoming the IGN boards, and weed out the individuals that can't type/post properly, and won't attempt to improve, like Newb already stated. I know I'm not a A+ poster either, so I don't want anybody to attack me..

Being rid of off-topic wouldn't so much get the place back on track, as it would cut our list of "regulars" in half. Sure, 100% of posts would be in on-topic forums, but the posts would be the same off-topic crap that we have now.

As for the warnings via PM. I've talked to Cpt. Rad Spencer SEVERAL times, both via PM, and IM. He's just an idiot. He hadn't made a single good post in the... year(?) he was here.

Carnage has been warned several times as well, though not through PM.

I find the request for PM warnings for people too lazy to use a real word to be an insult. They can't take 4 seconds longer during posting to spell a real word, But I should take the time to privately discuss punishments with them. This may seem immature, but that's no fun at all. If you're stupid enough to post something of such poor quality, you deserve exactly what you get.

Nope, note that the majority of them were deleted even prior to my finding this thread.

Perhaps not, but there's a reason this is the only forum I check daily. Understand?

It certainly seems you're defending them, or at least protesting their punishment. Or are you just debating the "rules" which are just common sense/courtesy. Do you want to try to read the useless bullshit they post just because they're too lazy to try? I know I don't. and I refuse to tolerate it anywhere that I have the authority to remedy it. it appears most users agree with my point of view.

Note that I'm not banning due to being on some POWer trip. This is a perfectly valid thread, and shall remain here, and Jack shall recieve no punishment for having an opinion.

For what it's worth, I don't think I could just post on NES related subjects... my collection is piteably (sp?) small, and my knowledge is limited.

However, seeing as how uglyjack has a good point, and something which I've kind of been thinking about for a while, I will try to limit my off-topic banter and try to contribute more in gaming related subjects as a whole.

Now, the effect may not be noticable whatsoever, but at least I'll be .

The same goes for me, I think I must try to post more NES related things here on the forums. Like Uber Newb, I do also have a poor collection of NES Games, and I do not know too much when it come to NES related things. I love the forums and talking to the people who hang out here.

I remember when I first came here, I was only browsing through the nesfiles for emulators and ROMs, but I decided to join the forums and you can feel free to thank Nes-a-holic for that.

So I guess I improve myself, it is all just a matter of time.

But your off-topic banter is what keeps us in stitches!
I understand what you mean, though; before I joined the NES Files, I thought I had a pretty damned big collection of games. But looking at the stuff that is out there, I probably own, cartridge-wise, about 1/4 of the NES Games ever produced. That's pretty weak.
Of course, now that I've got ROMs and such, I may be able to talk about more games. Hell, I could talk about the aesthetically pleasing values of "Peek-A-Boo Poker" and "Bubble Bath Babes" for hours...

I agree.

To tell you the truth, it's because NES-Luke did that that I realized we even had a preview button.

And I personally think that it blunt, but I have to wonder if DTC/Teh Captain would not have reacted the same, regardless of the way the message was delivered.

Also, I think we need to remember why we wanted good spelling and grammar in the first place. It was originally out of courtesy for any non-english speakers who came upon the forum.

I'm not from an English speaking country, but good spelling and grammar is my first priority. When I see people here on the forums that lives in an English speaking country who can't seem to see the difference between the words "red" and "blue", then I think something's wrong.

I'm not putting anyone down, but to just get a warning for your bad grammar and then start a whole war about it just make you seem like an idiot.

It seems I have missed all the fun once again (well, not fun, but I did find the whole thing amusing). The first time I've smiled in days.

I think grammer/spelling should be a priority. We all lead busy lives and a lot of us don't have the patience or the time to try decipher someone's crap posts.
I'm not saying it has to be perfect, just readable/understandable. I'm tired a lot of times too, but you don't see me putting tons of extra letters in words or threading together incomplete sentences.

Out of curiosity is there any way to add a spellchecker to the toolbar (maybe after the URL button)?

Just an idea, but maybe people could type what they're going to say in a topic in Wordpad (if they have it), run a spell check there, and copy/paste it into the topic reply box. Convoluted procedure, but it would work.
Or, if they're in doubt, use the basics--a dictionary.

That's the whole issue, the people that care enough to do that are mostly legible anyway, it's the lazy morons that don't even try that are the problem.
