C.U.P.E Strike.

In Off-topic

Anyone who lives in Canada and lives in Ontario knows about this. If there isn't an offer is made by 12:10 am tonight there will be a strike here are some workers who are under this union:
School Cleaners
Teacher Helpers
Snow Plowers
Garbage Man

And many more....

If there still on strike by monday my school will be closed well this seems like good news but it could get worse.

So... info? Are you guys going to hell in a handbasket, or what?

well that sucks.... hopefully everything turns out ok.

Yeah it sucks, because the schools around here are staying open regardless god..

I covered this story for the Sheridan newspaper. It seems like the strike would only last a day or two, considering the fact that it would be a so-called 'illegal' strike. It would be more of a display of POWer than an actual strike.

Any school with an old-style broiler would be closed, since there's no staff to run it. It's a safety thing, I think. Beyond that, the schools will be open. None of the schools in my area will be affected by the strike, but there are still quite a few in the GTA that would shut down.

I'm more concerned about the College union's potential strike in a little over a week. :(

I will never understand the whole concept of "unions".

Sure they do some good things for workers but...

If you don't do your job you should be fired. If I one day woke up and went to my boss saying I wasn't getting paid enough and I was going to NOT work until we came to an agreement I would be fired. Why should a group of people get special treatment?

Without unions, worker's rights are hard to protect. Corrupt/greedy/incompetent unions are sucky, but for the most part, they're good for laborers. They don’t get special treatment because they’re a group; they form a group so they can get things like health coverage. Or at least, in theory.

Yes. If you don't do your job, you should be fired. But if you're not getting your fare share while the Managment can barely make it home because of all the money in their pockets, well. The workers have to stand up for themselves.

An such a thing. Perhaps it's time to introduce some Canadian concepts...

I don't know how the unions are up there, but my problem with America's unions is that they really don't seem to represent the worker any more, they've really become entities unto themselves. Every teacher I have absolutely despises the teacher's union...

One of my teacher's didn't even want to join the union. So he didn't... but then he found out that he was still paying union dues. Even though . So apparently, every teacher might as well join the union, since they're paying for it anyway.

The union is planning to strike in protest of a bill which is being passed, I beleive, and not Contract negotiatios pertaining to the union per se. So theyplan on striking while still under Contract.

A union can only legally strike if its Contract is under negotiations, and an agreement is not reached. And if it has not waived its right to strike in the previous Contract.

But non-striking unions are shitty. ;D

This sucks. No strike!

See that's what "rubs" me the wrong way. It's like your teacher(and all the other no conformist teachers) was/were "bullied" into joining the union. What's wrong with representing yourself? I personally don't like when other people "speak" for me.

I also get annoyed when I hear the Northwest Airline workers are constantly threatening/or going on strike. The company is going bankrupt and it's like they want to make the airline go completely bust. Which if you think about is dumb, because if there is no airline, where are they going to work? All those people without jobs and no where to go. There are only so many pilot, flight attendent, mechanic jobs available.

If people don't like their job why don't they just find another one? Why all the drama?

At my job, speaking with a union gets you fired.

Ouch that sucks.
