How can i transfer music from vinyls onto a computer and convert them to MP3 Format? I have like 9 Yes albums kicking around i want to do that with.

i do that a lot.. well, mostly with tapes, but sometimes records. i've got a record player which i run into the "line in" jack.. actually i run the record player to the tape deck, and the tape deck into the computer (need a RCA to 1/8 cable). then record to wav.. then edit and stuff (remove any loud pops from the vinyl, boost the bass if necessary, separate songs). then take the wavs and burn to cd and/or convert to mp3.
It's pretty easy if you've got everything already set up like that. otherwise, it might be better to just shell out a few bucks and buy the albums on cd, assuming it's nothing super rare not available on cd.

Wow, I'd love to get my hands on a bunch of Yes albums, they're awesome.

If you try to run a turn table directly into the computer, it won't sound very good. A turn table needs 1 of 2 things,

1. An old reciever that has a "PHONO" input, then send this to the computer

2. A pre-amp

The needle's output is too weak for a normal "AUX" input, it needs to be amplified before going to the computer, other than that, you just need some recording software to put it into a .wav file, then convert to an MP3.

Unless these are rare albums that you can't find anywhere, I suggest you download them. Then you'll either have versions ripped from vinyl by someone who is experienced and has good equipment, or if it's been re-released by the record label, a professionally done version.

If not, then a standard turntable>pre-amp>computer line-in will do.

So if I had some audibooks on tape I wanted to transfer I'd just need to run the output of the tape deck into the "mic" jack on the computer?

No, use the line-in (the blue one). The mic jack will have an additional pre-amp. This is usually a really crappy pre-amp. Only use the mic input if you have to.

That's the best idea. Vinyl can sound as good as CD (or better, depending on the type of song) but it's very hard. The best turn table+brand new record without a speck of dust on it+top of the line reciever/amplifier. I know some of my parent's records are in pretty new/clean shape, but they still aren't perfect.

You're telling me! They have to be the best band i have ever heard. i think i have:
Yes
A time and a word
fragile
close to the edge
tales from topographic oceans
relayer
yessongs
90125
and a 3 disc Set: Yes 35th Anniversary collection Cd

You know, I wish I could afford to get a new needle for my turntable. My father gave me all of his old records, and there are some awesome albums in that collection. I'd like to try to convert them to files, but it'll have to wait on my needle (plus getting it balanced). Here's a pic of my records

I've been playing my parent's albums lately. Most are in good condition and I have a mint 80s computerized, high end turn table with a never-used needle (I guess it was my dad's, but he never seemed to care to use it).
I have it Hooked up to a 1970s Panasonic solid state reciever but the speakers suck.
How much would a cartridge for a TT go for?

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm?

Man, Roth, you have some sweet looking L.P's
My parents have some good ones, mainly 70's, Led Zepplin, Rolling Stones, The Beatles and some 80's stuff, Kate Bush etc.
Anyway, back on topic, I would agree with Mr. DNA and download them. Or try to.

I dont think he was being sarcastic, if you have evr given them the time and listen to them you would want some too. What reason would he have to be sarcastic? I didnt say anything to offened anyone did i?

(and if im tottally wrong, sorry for coming off as a complete idiot )

was the first cd i ever bought.. or at least somewhere in the first 3, i believe. How can anyone deny the guitar solo of "Owner of a Lonely Heart"? But that's the only Yes album i've ever heard.

back to the transferring question.. you can bypass the need for a preamp by normalizing and EQing the wav (jacking up the bass and dropping down the treble).. sure, it's a bit of work, but if you don't have a receiver handy, it can still give you a good result.

Thank you for all of the help, but i think i will just buy all of their albums on CD.

(Im really only a fan of their 70's albums, 90125 got a little to far into the "pop" Realm for me. Their earlier realeses of Prog. rock are my favourites. Gates of delirium, close to the edge roundabout etc etc.)

Well if you just want the music it's here...

I can understand the joy of owning a new CD though.

I transfer from vinyl to digital means using a program called Total Recorder. It allows you to record any incoming audio in real time.

Heres a picture of what my dad has left of his LP's.

Notables on top.

Yeah, I'm sure they will be mine. Only have a 19 year old sister, she could care less. Theres lots of BS records of my mom's there too, Oak Ridge boys.. Michael Jackson..Purple thunder.. agghhh.

I can top that... My mom's got (quite a few I might add)...

Hah! There's about 5 Kenny Rogers records in my pile too! I shot a hole through a bay city rollers record yesterday.

I'm too lazy to take pics right now, but I've got some AWESOME albums on vinyl. All the Ozzy albums from Blizzard to Tears, Led Zeppelin I-IV, Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind and POWerslave, MJ's Thriller, and the two that I like having on vinyl the best:

Pics on request.

Yes Rush.. I also have . And Led Zepplin IV (bah). I can only listen to about 3 bands..

You guys have Pink Floyd: The Wall!?!?!?!

Lucky SOBS!

heres one i can remember my Dad Gave me,

Saturday Night Fever SoundTrack, and don't get me Wrong, Bee Gees Kick Ass.

I have that one!

John Travolta...what has scientology done to you?!?!?!

I record vinyl -> mp3 all the time, except I have a high end mixer and a semi-decent sound card.

If you really want to record vinyl into your computer I highly suggest investing in at least some kind of upgraded sound card. You'll be thankful later

I've got the whole set up now, bought the (Was remixed in 1976 and the original version is not available on CD).
Sony turntable>Teac stereo amplifier>Out>Line in>Polderbits line in WAV recording

An LP thread? I didn't notice this one. I inherited quite a few from my mom, and picked up a few myself, I've also got 45's, 78's, etc. But among the classics:
Almost all the Bob Dylan albums, including his first.
All Beatles, the American Capitol versions (got the British CD's)
Peter, Paul & Mary, most of them
Led Zeppelin, all except In Through The Out Door
The black Metallica album with Enter Sandman, and a needle has never touched it.
Ah, there's just too many. I've got to pick up another camera soon.

This is so weird! I just bought a new record, since, to me, this one is just a collectable. I was originally planning on posting this on the "Cool Finds" topic, but then all of a sudden I see that there's an own topic for this.

This is what I bought from the store I usually go to where they have a lot of cool, old stuff:

heh heh... hee hee... haha I PITY THE FOO' WHO DID NOT BID ON THIS AUCTION! I WIN! I WIN OVER EVERYONE! AH HA HA HA!

Oh man! Grandpa 1215 (?) got screwed. Hee-hee. I would think a Python album would be worth a LOT more than that.
Mozilla Firefox...how much KB/MB does it rob? I've been thinking of getting that for awhile, but don't want to slow my com down any more than it is.

The Stones started on that label!

Well, I certainly hope that I recieve the record, considering he only accepted cash or checks... but, his feedback was very good, and the price was way too damn good.

AND, "Tie & Handkerchief" was the record that had two grooves on one side. Big collector's item.

A nice Mother's Day present, no?

Once again, this shows that you're a real fan of the Monty Python series, Newb, but then again you've never hidden it either. Congratulations on winning that record!
