New Super Mario Bros.

In Handhelds

Jeux France is reporting that the New Super Mario Bros. game for the DS will have

Oh man... I'm getting all jittery.

In other news, automatic translation sucks.

Yeah, I read about that on some blog today.
If that isn't nice news.

80 levels of awesoime old-school 2D platform action. (At least I hope so)

I was going to get it anyway, but this announcement makes me want it even more. I hope they don't screw it up, but I have faith in them.

So, what do those who have played this game think of it? Is it deserved of the hype?

It's a great Super Mario Bros. game, but ignore anyone that says it's better than Yoshi's Island.

The best comparison I can give is...

Imagine Super Mario World, with some throwbacks to Super Mario Bros. 1 (flag poles at the end of the levels, some of the boss fights)

I only read one review that said it's better than Yoshi's island. All others including Luke say it's great, but not better than Yoshi's Island... so I'll believe that one.
Now I only have to wait for it to become weekly special at play-asia.

Super Mario World was/is a great game, so if it's anything like that, it's going to kick ass. So, does it have the speculated 80 levels?

I counted 78 that Roll and I have access to right now, there may be 2 more that I haven't discovered yet, or perhaps they just exagerated a little...

Well, 78 is near enough 80. It's still a hell of a lot of levels.

I am picking this one help along side with NDS Lite.

So what's this I see on the commercials with Mario walking right through bricks on this one when he's big? Is that part of this game or just commercial hype? Whatever it is, from the looks of this one in general, I've got to pick up that damn DS soon...

Nope, that's in the game. Mario gets super huge, the more junk your mash, the more lives you get when the effect wears off.

I just finished 100%ing this game (3 stars). It was awesome. Now I'm gonna start trying to work on speed running it. Nothing hardcore like the guys who make the videos, but just try to see how fast I can get.

I've never played Yoshi's Island, but I always hear it's so amazing. I need to get a SNES and try it out someday.

Never played Yoshi's Island? ... *fainting*

*waking up* ... Get it and play it! And fast! Best platformer ever.

And soon there will be Yoshi's Island 2.

A certain "kind of mentally unbalanced" friend of mine will be happy to hear about the destruction in the new SMB because for some reason, smashing bricks in even the original was more attractive to him than anything else...
Yes, I agree with the Yoshi's Island awesomeness. It never ceases to amaze me how Nintendo keeps coming up with new ways to play games (re: Yoshi's hurling of the eggs at targets to defeat them), while mostly with PS2 and such you just shoot 'n' slash.
Unfortunately, I don't have the cart of this, just the NES ROM, and no control pad, and Yoshi's hard to control with the keyboard!

That's why I've never played the game. It came out really late in the SNES lifetime, at which time I wasn't buying any new games for the system. Also, I don't like playing games with an emulator, especially platformers. I find the control timing is always off and it just leads to frustration.

How is the GBA version of it? Maybe I can grab that and play it on my DS.

The GBA version is really great. Same as the SNES version only thing extra is the Mario Brothers Arcade game.

I've been playing through this game and reached world 8. It appears that I can't gain acsess to the fourth and seventh worlds. How can I? do I have to collect star coins or something?

I have had the same problem... I figured maybe it would open up after I did that annoyingly huge castle in world 8 (which I never did get through). It's a good question, I have been meaning to ask it as well, just kept slipping my mind....

Luke has to have won it.... did you ever get those worlds open and how?.

Notice in the castles of world 2 and 5, after you kill the boss there's that little pathway below the main one? Just kill the bosses of those castles while you are using the mini-mushroom. Bam.

i need to get this game. but it'll have to wait. i'm in the process of saving up $400 for the boat i'm getting
