Console Emulation 101

In Emulators / NES ROMs

I am wanting to use emulators on a gaming console instead of a PC. However, outside of downloading emulators and running them on a PC, I have no clue how to do it. Just had a couple questions.

I think that's pretty much it. I tried to do a search for "Console Emulation", but got a wide range of results, none of which really answered my questions. Any help appreciated. Also, if anyone know of any reference guides or walkthroughs on the questions above, please let me know. Thanks.

Here's two topics you can peak at real quick. They are both DreamCast related:

As for Playstation, I've never even tried messing with it. Hopefully those threads can give you an idea of what you need to do.

Perfect! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Looks as though SNES doesn't fully emulate (only about 85% speed). I'll still give it a shot though. Thanks again.

There are really only two options for good console emulation - DreamCast and XBOX.
Here's a list for the best emulators for each of the working consoles that I've tested.

Can emulate most 8-bit systems to perfection. Doesn't require any additional modding, just needs to be the right revision ("1" or "0").

Best emulated systems for DreamCast:
NES - NesterDC 6.0, NesterDC SE (as good as emulation gets)
GameBoy/ GBC - DCgnuBoy (same as NES, excellent)
Master System - SMS Plus (perfect emulation and awesome looking GUI)
Arcade - MAME-DC (Pre-1990's games run great, others not so well)

Technically the DC can also do Super Nintendo, Genesis, and Playstation, but they are hardly satisfactory performance-wise.

Requires intense modding (lots of hardware knowledge needed). Can emulate virtually every pre-year 2000 console excellently.

Best emulators for XBOX:
NES - FCE UltraX, MednafenX-NES (both perfect)
Super Nintendo - xSNES9x, zSNESx (near perfect)
Genesis - Xenesis (does Sega-CD and 32X also)
TurboGrafx-16/ TurboDuo - MednafenX-PCE (emulates CD-rom beautifully)
GameBoy/ Game Boy Advance - XBoyAdvance (plays great)
Arcade - MAMEoX (absolutely amazing)
Neo*Geo - fbaxxx (yeah, that's right!)
PC/ DOS - dosXbox (depends on individual game, but the one's I've tried run well)

XBOX can emulate Playstation very well (PcSXbox). Accurate speed and sound on most games, but still isn't perfect. It's good enough to make a playable emulator though.

N64 emulates almost as good as it does on PC (Project 64x, 1964, UltraHLE). It can play the games that actually work pretty well, but still needs a lot of improvement.

Obviously, if you want hardcore emulation on a console, the XBOX is the way to go. DreamCast is satisfactory for the 8-bit systems.

Great information. Thanks a bunch. Not sure if you've tried the PS1 emulator on XBOX, but as far as the speed, how is it? For instance, could I play action/adventure games such as Castlevania?

Yes, yes you can :) There are some games that may run a tad glitchy, but as a whole, PSOne emulation on XBox is pretty damn good.
