haggling techniques

In Collecting

i havent posted a topic yet so i thought it was about time to do one

o.k here it is, im not sure if anyone has posted this topic before if so just delete it.

does anyone have any good haggling tactics, or techniques, like wearing old clothes so you look poor, or saying you saw it some place else for cheaper, or anything better

I usually say "hmmm, that's a bit more than I wanted to pay..." or if it's a console, I ask if things can be thrown in with it, such as a game or two, that sort of thing.

For example, I got a 4-switch Atari 2600, the guy wanted $20, I got him down to $6 using both of those methods.

he offered me one in worse shape for $10 after I said $20 was a bit much, then when I paid for it, I asked if he could toss a common game in with it. He couldn't find a common game, so he gave me back $4 and told me "that's enough to get a common game up the street"

Nice, everytime, i do that they say no, your just a stupid little Kid.

I just say, "Everything here is too much, lets go to that other place. They have really good prices." Then, the guy/girl usally comes up to me, well, for you, I can lower the price. Works pretty well.

i usually buy larger amounts and continue to buy from that person or at least stop by and see if they have anything new do that with a couple of vendors and you have you a nice ring of people who now you buy alot so the price tend to get better everytime.

Does this work several times in the same shop? Just wondering.

Until now I didn't have the need to cut prices down, because everything I got in Japan was already cheap.

walk away, sometimes they'll lower the price if theyre desperate to sell
