Newbie Likey.
By ToddVania on 5/18/2006 1:06:47 PM
I avoided this entire series for a long, long time, as I get hooked on games with sequels too often, and wind up suffering from intense pocketbook damage. But just a month ago I started playing this and was, as I thought I would be, instantly addicted.
The gameplay is fantastic, with all kinds of different weapons and armor, and the option that lets you "use" pieces of armor and weapons without them being "equipped" is very helpful. The game will test patience with the amount of money you need at the beginning, but this works itself out toward the end, where the money issue becomes a moot point.
Great mix 'n' match choice of characters, so not every game is the same. You also have the formidable challenge of going solo, which would be the ultimate challenge.
Great graphics for the 8-bit NES, and a thoroughly engrossing game. My only complaints are ones that are common with this one: the combat issue where you miss a certain enemy if it's been defeated already by another party member, and lack of space in your weapon/armor inventory.
I give this classic a 9 and 1/2 out of 10. Well, now I'm off to buy the rest of the series. **SIGH**

A game to carve the path of it's genre
By Digitality Project on 5/9/2006 12:25:18 AM
Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Warrior were the three games that set me on the path of RPG fandom. I have beaten Final Fantasy dozens of times, even with a solo run of each class. Though it is outdated, for it's time it was wonferfully done. Many of the early RPGs mark the greatest story lines and depth of the entire genre. Many newer RPGs lack many of the required qualities, or overdo things too much that they don't focus on the details that count most. My only complaint with Final Fantasy is that many of the swords and weapons special abilities DO NOT WORK. (The rune sword DOES NOT do extra damage to mages or the were sword DOES NOT do extra damage to were monsters) I belive this was corrected for the Gameboy Advance port, mayhap someone could clarify?

lol
By Popstar64:D on 7/13/2005 1:23:34 PM
lol nice story below me. FF is average to me, it's very hard in the beginning but when you get the hang of it, you can beat Garland with ease. Once you get the ship the whole game will change from boringness to coolness, but the airship is better! A really good game but the ineffective thing should've gone away and it's too predictable. 3/5

Love it!!
By Jennie on 5/30/2005 2:14:17 PM
Final Fantasy is the best RPG ever!! I've played most of the newer ones, but this one is still my fav. I've played and beat it tons of times but it never gets old or boring. Keeps me coming back time after time. It has a great story, awesome characters, neat music and graphics for its time. If you know games at all, then you should have respect for this one. It really is a timeless classic!

This game Rules!
By Ressul on 4/30/2005 4:25:14 PM
This is the game that got me hooked on RPGs. I got it when I was 6 and that was about 14 years ago. I have beaten it 80+ times. The most challenging combo of chars i beat it with would be 4 White Mages but the most fun. I recommend this game to any hardcore RPG fan.

Wrath of the Angry Gamer
By The Gamer on 3/8/2005 6:09:46 PM
This has to be the worse game I have ever encountered. It is nothing compared to Strider or Zelda. The title screen makes me sick, and the music has made me vomit a total of 06.42 times. I've even wet the bed because of this game. Oh God, keep it away. Maybe if it had better graphics and wasn't so buggy I could stand playing it for more than 10 minutes. P.S. My mom hates it too.

THE #1 Fan
By CAM on 11/8/2004 2:38:12 PM
i first started playing FF1 when i was about 7, im 19 now, and still love the game. I've beat it more than 20 times, using a variety of characters, ive got it down to an art. beating the game with 4 Black Belts is pretty much impossible i found. this game rocks, and even though the new RPG's beat it in graphics and storyline, they cant beat the legend.

MENU
By Misguided on 10/1/2004 9:54:50 PM
I have killed many people using the attack menu in real life, I have twice as much experience points than most the people i meet in the ghetto that play manhunt on PS2.

The best damn RPG for the nes
By McDick2002 on 8/29/2004 12:47:53 PM
Final Fantasy was a game I bought one day and had no idea what it was. I lucked out FF is a kickass RPG. It revolutionized rpgs for consoles. And with all due respect to Zelda FF is the best RPG for the nes. If you like RPGs (if you dont you need to be slapped anyways) you will love this. And if you get a copy for the console youll find out it was one of the first video games to have a comprhensive strategy guide included. Have fun and don't strike your console when you die (and you will)! I lost my game doing that and had to start over.

Honaka Harry, you are officially a jackass.
By Username on 7/20/2004 6:46:47 PM
Honaka Harry, I doubt you'll even read this, but Final Fantasy was named that because this game was supposed to be the FINAL (<--READ) game Square ever made. It was -so- good, it got them away from bankruptcy. Again, to beat it through your thick skull, It is named what it is because it was meant to be the last, the FINAL game, FINAL -Fantasy- game, no less, that square ever made. False advertising? Puh-lease. Anyway, great game. Classic =)

Hack N Slash!!!!!!!
By WiGGSpLiTTeR on 11/14/2003 2:27:45 PM
I hate these games they should all be put on an island with all of you nerds who play them and stay away from the hack N slashers who in real real life would beat the shit outta you before you could even open your menu and choose attack!!!!!!!

Final Fantasy
By Dan on 10/21/2003 2:24:15 PM
I actually first beat Chaos by casting the lovely level 1 or 2 spell of mute. I've since tried with my emulator and have been unable to reproduce the results. Needless to say, I was surprised as all hell.

A Blast From The Past
By Tao Fenix on 6/21/2003 8:02:17 PM
Well FF1 is the game that started squaresoft's reign as RGP king and I am glad to have been around to whitness and play Final Fantasy I was even happier when they brought it to playstation so that my family can enjoy it as much as I do

Revive The Power of the Orbs!
By Black Mage on 6/19/2003 3:15:12 PM
In Essence Final Fantasy 1 is the greatest game ever. It is so amazingly fun to play. I do have to admit that the fighting scenes take an a incredibly long time and it is extremely difficult but there is no greater feeling in this life than reviving the Power of the Orbs.

Classic RPG
By Rob Veon on 5/5/2003 10:21:15 PM
This game, along with Dragon Warrior, defined the future of RPGs. To whoever asked about a good emulator, I'd go with Jnes, cause it has a Game Genie built into it. Plus a good Game Genie code for this game is TNTPOT which levels you up like crazy. Do yourself a favor and set the game speed up if you use it though or you'll want to tear your eyes out after a fight.

Yeah, it's nice, BUT...
By Fredde on 2/20/2003 1:47:55 PM
Of course, this game is (was) great. But there are some things that we have to remember. Firts of all, the poor translation. the first boss says "I will knock you all down!" Shiver me timbers! I had nightmares for months after that! Ahem. And of course, they call it ORBS. But in the original, it's CRYSTALS.

Why am I complaining about details like this? Because there is so little to complain about! The best thing about this game is its feeling of grandness.

ROCK ON FF FANS!!
By Adam Jayko on 2/20/2003 6:27:07 AM
This game is the 2nd RPG I played and i loved it. It has a good stroyline and the promotion u get later in the game. After I played this game I got hooked on Final Fantasy. I now have every game they made(1 to 10). This game rocks:)

fading memories....
By Tobias on 2/10/2003 4:28:35 PM
I still remember... When I was about six and still didn't know how to play anything except mario, I saw my brother come home from school. He had a game in his hand. Dancing around his feet, I followed him to the basemet where he began playing. I don't even remember if the game was final fantasy or not, but that made me want to play, now I play ever RPG i can get ahold of.

completely awesome
By kicker of ass on 2/4/2003 4:09:53 PM
What can I say? This is the godfather of all RPG's. Not only the beginning of the badass series, but a masterpiece in its own right. If I could give it a hundred stars, I would. Every RPG fan must play this game.

classic rpg
By tomkat on 1/16/2003 3:48:22 PM
This was the game that got me hooked on RPG games. A friend and I once set out to beat the game in 24 hours or less, we were playing in 1 hour shifts. I think we both fell asleep about 7 or 8 hours into it. I remember waking up with the controller in my hands at noon the next day. Sorry about the useless story, it's just a vivid memory of the game that I have.

Ok
By Chris on 10/4/2002 1:54:20 PM
I mean ok you pay top dollar for this game... it starts out good.... then it gets hard... then it gets you mad..... then you're like ok I hate this game...
Poor game unless you have alot of time on you're hands...

Final Fantasy 1
By Pegasus on 8/8/2002 4:51:44 PM
I think this is a wonderful game. You get to choose your characters, there are cool looking enemys, and neat sprites for back then. I give it 9/10.

FF RULEZZZ!!!
By Evil Skin on 6/23/2002 2:31:33 PM
This is the first final fantasy. Although I've already played all the others (except the newest X), I believe that this is the best!! The graphics are ok for a nes game (better than the ones from DW) they are 8. The sound is good but it can be a bit annoying. Sound is always the worst part of any ff. it's a 6. Gameplay is 10. The game is extremely fun and it can take lots of hours to finish.
Overall: 9/10

Best of the Best
By Rob on 4/17/2002 5:16:12 PM
FF1 is by far the best final fantasy game yet. A close second is Final Fantasy Tactics, but thats an entierly different issue. The graphics are good for the time, the music is good, and the plot is awesome. I much prefer the simple animations of FF1 to the eye-candy of FF7 - FF10. The game has great replay value too. Want something to do? Make a party of all magic users or none. Either way, it's a real shift in play style and quite a challenge.

Final Fantasy
By Sir Léon on 3/17/2002 12:53:11 AM
I played FFIIV and it sucked.
I found a good NES emulator on the web and started seaching for my favorite games back when i was a kid. Excitebike, Sidepocket, Blades of Steel, and some of my newer favorites after playing Metal Gears Solid and Sons of Liberty, I got Metal Gear and Snake's Revenge. So I thought about what else to get, and i saw Final fantasy,,,and i was like "this has to be better than 7" so i downloaded it,,,and it was in Frickin Japanese,,,i did that about 5 times until finaly (pardon the pun) got Final Fantasy American....

This is my favorite NES game of all time so far, and it will be most likely, This game has so much replayablilty, and it is great.
Gameplay: 10
Sound:10
Grafix:10 for that era
Replay:10
Overall: 10!!

Verdict: If you have 50 bucks get this game on eBay, if you want to save money, download an emulator, then download this game, you will love it for a lifetime.

Best Nes Game Ever
By General Kefka on 10/4/2001 9:49:18 PM
Final Fantasy has an excellent plot, much better that some other ones(seriosly). And is linked to FFVII's plot and FFV's, in the prelude. Read and find out. This has a unique battle system, lots of bosses. And if you think this game is short, you are WRONG! It took me 30 hours to beat it! Greatest NES game ever made.

***** stars

FANTASY IS REALITY
By Chris on 9/8/2001 3:13:06 PM
The final fantasy series is great! the music makes you jump around on your seet!

Unfufilled Fantasy
By Dragon Chaser on 8/25/2001 1:34:32 AM
I'm an RPG fan, this is a legendary RPG. True it has many outstanding innovations for its day but the feeling of the game just never worked for me. None of the FF's hooked me. Whenever I play one of them I have to pretend it's a Dragon Warrior game to keep me going and that doesn't work to well since its not a DW game. Still it is a damn fine game and deserves its place in history. A score of 4.3/5 is what it get from me. I recommend any one of the 4 Dragon Warrior games though over this.

Cool RPG
By Connor on 7/19/2001 8:25:31 PM
When I first got this game I was only 5 years old so I had no idea what an RPG was. But once I played FF3 when I was 8, I realized I had the original sitting in my room. I played it and grew to like it. It's probably my favorite RPG (along with FF3). I like how you can pick your characters instead of getting actual people. It's also cool how you start out as youths and later on in the game you become adults and your characters change form. This game is really long, and MAN is CHAOS hard!

Download this!
By MI64 on 7/11/2001 4:07:50 PM
This was the first RPG I ever owned for NES. I was so obsessed with this game that when I found out my Mom had bought it for me for Christmas, I bugged her until she gave it to me two months early!! This game is a classic, has a good story and is just plain fun. It may not live up to today's standards as far as RPG go, but just about anyone who has ever played/owned this game will tell you it was a favorite, if not THE favorite of all their games for NES. Big fat 5/5!

#1 RPG!!!
By Logan on 6/2/2001 9:55:43 PM
If there was ever a totally awesome RPG out there, then this is it! This game will keep entertain for hours. When i first got it for NES, it took me 3-4 months to beat, (playing all the time!)
Now that I have it on Nester I can take my favorite RPG with me to any PC console and enjoy it. I definitely rate this 5 out of 5 5/5 (I would do 6 out of 5!)

Sweet
By Josh on 5/27/2001 10:23:20 PM
For being the first FF game it is still the best rpg on the nes. The creaters of this game made a good career choice. Square is the best rpg make in the world with FF1 through FFX coming out on the psx2.

Davy's Review
By Davy on 5/21/2001 8:45:17 PM
I LOVE THIS GAME!But my Nes Stopped working during a game and erased my saved game all my characters were at level 5 and i have 2800 Gold.ARGH!Well i think this game is the best you get to pick the characters instead of having them chose for you and i realy like the gameplay the only bad thing is the inefective thing when you attack nothing after killing a monster so i give it a 5 out of 5 5/5

Light Warrors of the Dragon Quest
By Mike the Bike on 4/11/2001 2:42:40 AM
Back in the days this was progres. Refinig the Dragon Warror format and giving it boost. Four orphans were given task to save the world by restoring the power of four elemental orbs. Now days the story is simple but in its time it was something diifrent and unsuspected when warrors traweled back in time to fight the final boss. Game play is on reptive side do to the
slow and long battles. And BOY , there are lots of those battles! Game is basicly non stop turnbattle tournament whit little exploring on the side.

Motto of the game:-"Yes give me 99 potions. Yes that is corpse of my friend Noel, he is b.mage."

Rating:=-->NOW 3/5
Back in the days 5/5
