I will always love Dragon Warrior/Quest. Although this game is limited compared to it's sequels, it has a certain charm and charisma that keeps drawing me back.

My favorite part of the whole game was after your rescue Gwaelin.

You talk to her and she goes,

"Dost thou love me?"

Your option is A: for Yes, and B: for No
If you select B: she goes,

"But thou must."

If you select 'A' she says,

"I'm so happy"

I kept selecting the 'B' button over and over.. she wouldn't let up.. I mean talk about demanding. LOL :D So I caved and said yes. This women can't take a hint or what. HAHA

I also like at the end of this when your at the Dragon Lord, he gives you an option to join him. You select yes, and your game's over. LOL Though it was a funny option to put in, as it's purpose is mearly to make you have to reset and head back there. :D

Good game, fight music drove me nuts after awhile though. I mean you walk a few steps.. fight scene starts.. you fight the enemy, and win. The overworld music plays. You take a few steps more, then the battle starts again. Just kinda annoyed me after awhile. Other then that, this is a masterpiece even though it's fairly simple and linear.

10/10

The Best
By bodanger on 9/3/2005 9:02:41 PM
This is one of the first games I ever played. I think it is the best RPG ever, partly from personal bias and partly because it's easy and fun. Tips: to beat the Dragon Lord, you must be at least level 20, but I reccomend level 21 (and buy as many herbs before you go). I know that most people don't know these things, so here goes... The best armor is in the ghost town (you need to be at least level 16 or 17, and someone should tell you where to search(it's guarded by a knight person)). The best sword is in a treasure chest in the Dragon Lord's Castle. The best Shield can be bought from the town that's near the swamp (same place where you buy a fire sword). Don't forget to get Erderick's token. Someone will tell you where to search for it. Finally, early on in the game, you can go to a cave in the west (level 7 I think) and get a fighter's ring and a cursed belt) The fighter's ring is good to have, and the belt will sell for a good price. Go back and get the belt multiple times if you can, so you can sell it. Oh yeah, and before I forget, try taking the princess to the inn in the town near the midgard. When I was 7 or 8 I thought it was funny what the man at the door said.

What a great game
By Popstar64:D on 7/13/2005 1:12:55 PM
First off some explaination. I'm surethat D.W.is the FIRST RPG ever. That's why there was a menu system so n00bs on this genre can learn easy. So it's some FF spoof! The graphics are ok for me... This game is great and I can't beat the DragonLord(Second form). But the game DW 1 an 2 is better than th NES. The graphics are updated. Take this game a shot and just battle some Slimes until you level up. Seriously, it gets fun if you speed toggle and have a seriously high level whoopin' monsters to Monster hell! 4 1/2/5

Dragon Warrior is the best RPG ever! I'm getting it for Christmas this year, I can't wait.

I AM A TRUE DRAGON WARRIOR
By DRAGON WARRIOR on 9/22/2004 10:23:14 PM
When I was about 8 I defeated the dragon lord with 3 to 4 hits and was at such an astronomical high level that my goal was to defeat the last bad guy with ONE hit. (got so close) This game requires nothing less than DEDICATION which modern people do not even know the meaning of. I just bought final fantasy and I would have to say FF is better so far (played 20 hours in the last 2 days). This is such a cheap game though, definetly worth the 5-10 $ on ebay. (By the way after Final Fantasy 7 it all went downhill) Too bad Dragon warrior had to make stupid little kid gameboy advanced games. K final word, if you can invest 100 hrs a week into dragon warrior it is worth it if you cant then stick to your PS2 ya city slicker!!!

Evil is afoot!

If you've never played Dragon Warrior you need to be slapped. Really hard. Several times. Dragon Warrior might have been the best game ever released for the nes if Final Fantasy hadn't came out. Screw Zelda. Everybody loves it and all but Im reviewing DW. When you start playing expect to die. A lot. You earn your way through this game. Once you accomplish something and you apologize to your better half for cussing them when you died you will understand why this game is fun...Nobody gives you squat. You earn it and its worthwhile. If you like RPGs you'll love DW. If not, go play Zelda with the rest of those mindless zombies...

The First, The Finest
By Dorfyou on 12/23/2003 2:11:22 AM
To all you young 'uns who think that the latest installment of Final Fantasy 5 billion is awesome, go screw yourself. THIS GAME IS THE ORIGINAL RPG! Yeah so what if the graphics and sound suck (which they didn't for the time), and who gives a damn if the controls are a little funky. THIS IS THE CREAM OF THE CROP FOR IT's TIME. Playing this brings back fond memories of hours upon hours of play before and after grammer school. Screw bells and whistles, this game has character than only time brings. 50/10

By dammnd on 7/10/2003 10:37:21 PM
This is the rpg i can whipe my arrs with after taking a bif one. This game sucks. The graphics suck. The towns are garbage. The gameplay sucks. you barely take a step and your killed by a blue slime and after you restart at the castle, guess hwat king takes half of your hard collected gold. Is there a special tax. I even tried to play it with game genie codes, still i got bored in 10 minutes. Dont get me wrong, i love rpg. BUT this is a pile of dudu

the graphics are hardly impressive in this final fantasy knock-off. and what's with the menu based system? how about you buy the real thing and go with final fantasy.

A nice little game
By Fredde on 2/20/2003 1:40:48 PM
Well, this game is kinda fun, allthough I must admit that it takes forever getting 'nough gold and EXP. But...well, I still think Final Fantasy 1 is better. It had a less "generic" story, slightly better graphic and a feeling of...grandness that I haven't found in Dragon Warrior (yet). But sure, we have to remember that this was in the Stone Age of console RPGs, so I guess I like it...

Dragon Warrior rocks!!
By Adam Jayko on 2/20/2003 6:14:18 AM
Dragon Warior is one of the best games made for the NES.Im a HUGE, HUGE RPG Fan. This was the first game I played for the NES. I don't know why people have a problem with it. It was only an 8-bit game, but it had wonderful graphics and game play. Its not got all the bells and whistles as the other games, but it had character and is a classic game to play. I still have my NES system and all the RPGs. Out of them all i would play this game forever! :)

go with final fantasy
By kicker of ass on 2/4/2003 10:18:49 PM
I'm a huge RPG fan and I'd always heard about the dragon warrior games, so I downloaded this one on an emulator and it was boring. Boring as Hell. Why anyone would play this game when they could play Final Fantasy, God only knows....

Drag On, Warrior
By BombOmb on 2/2/2003 4:09:14 PM
This game requires a crud load of patience. It takes forever to battle foes and achieve the amount of XP you need to continue. It sucks big time when you have to drag yourself all the way back to the kingdom to save where all the level one foes dwell and run. Random encounters are too random, some points I walk one tile and I run into another foe and it happens over and over again. At other points I can't find a foe anywhere, and when I do they run off. The difficulty skips from level 1 and 2 charachters to level 6 and 7 characters then it goes into like level 20 characters. Thank god you can't get game over. The only thing that's motivating you is XP, and when you achieve the next level, it hardly does enough to push you forward. DO NOT buy this game if you're impatient. If you want a basic NES RPG or you're new to RPGs buy this game and proceed onto other ones. Other than that, this game blows.

........
By quina on 1/28/2003 8:05:12 AM
OK, this is a very cool RPG. i like the battle system and all that stuff but the only thing i do not like about this game is that it takes to long to level up!!! as long as you have a lot of patience, you should go nand get this game! 7.5/10

Good... but not the best
By Thuldar on 1/25/2003 3:29:34 AM
Dragon Warrior may have been one of the first NES RPGs, and no one can doubt that it was simple, and entertaining. However, there were other TRUE RPGs out at the time, or even before Dragon Warrior, on other systems that I found to be great. The Bard's Tale series on the Apple, and C64 is one shinning example. If you enjoyed Dragon Warrior, then I recommend The Bard's Tale, Ultima, and Might and Magic. By the way I play my NES games on my Dreamcast! (Which will never run out of batteries)

The start of it all
By Ironman on 10/12/2002 10:16:34 AM
This title has a very simple premise. You are a knight out to save the Princess and Save the world. Problem is that the Princess is guarded by a fierce fire breathing dragon (of course) and dark over lord of the world is none other than the Dragon Lord. there are an army of monsters roaming the country side and if you don't build up experience, you will be monster chow.

this is the first game to actually utilze the idea of building levels in order to progress on. while Zelda would just be, grab a heart or stronger weapon, with this, it didn't matter what weapon you had, if you were at a low level you were screwed.

This was the start of a very dominant series on the NES, but all but forgotten on the SNES. The game itself is very challenging and if by chance you missied it on the NES I would strongly advise purchasing the GBC conversion where you get # 2 as well. THe challenge on that one seemed dummied down (Or maybe I am that damn good). But eitehr way this is a must have.

The journey begins!
By Xpenguin on 10/11/2002 11:55:55 PM
This game is really cool!! You cant beat it? Use game genie sucka!! haha, I love this game, it is better than any other Dragon Warrior. I give this game... ***** stars!

I must be blind...can't see the enemies
By ToddVania on 10/3/2002 12:57:43 PM
This is an awesome RPG by the NES standards. The gameplay is so engrossing don't plan on doing anything else for a week. My only complaints are, as usual, you have to beat an absurd number of enemies to get strong enough, and you can't see the enemies that attack on the main map to avoid them if necessary. If you want a similar, but smoother experience, play Ultima Exodous for the NES. This is good, though. 7 out of 10

Final Fantasy, although more popular,
just did not stack up to the great legend of Dragon Warrior. It is a real
shame that it wasn't as big a hit, but for those who played Dragon Warrior I and II loyally, you know that it is still the best RPG from old Nintendo. I'd give this a perfect 10, but you have to have patience (it is a virtue
afterall). The rewards are wonderful once you figure certain elements of these games out.

The Best!

The Dragon Warrior series rules. PLain and Simple.

great RPG, but where's the Toriyama art?
By Sarah on 3/3/2002 6:23:53 PM
Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest is a good RPG series, but I have to wonder why Nintendo decided to redo the box art and manual with uninteresting illustrations.

The character design (and original box design) was by Akira Toriyama, the author of Dragonball. Although Toriyama was unknown in North America back then, his drawing style is far more pleasant to look at than whoever who ended up doing the DW American box.

And what about the game? Well, it's one of the 2 standard knight-and-magic CRPGs that started it all (the other being Final Fantasy, of course). It's repetitive at times (are these colorful drops the cousins of the chocolate chip enemies in Zelda?), but it's still fun to play, if only to see how it evolved in its sequels.

Great but not Great...
By Joel on 1/26/2002 12:50:03 PM
A very fun RPG... it can be a bit slow and repetitive but it is still very fun. I got mine at a flea market. This game probaly has lots of replay value, but I havn't beat it yet.

Grade: B+
By Hokum on 1/1/2002 7:07:18 AM
Very simple RPG but a fun one nonetheless. The constant and random attack of monsters can get repetitive, but it's worthwhile and the story is engaging (if typical). A nice kick-off for the series. Too bad the battery in my cartridge died so it no longer saves games - good luck finding a reliable copy.

RPG LEGEND
By Dragon Chaser on 8/25/2001 1:22:06 AM
Yes many consider this the first RPG Video Game, wether it was or not it did at least set the foundation for modern RPG's. Dated by today's standards Dragon Warrior or Dragon Quest as it is known in Japan is none the less a shining example of what a game should be. Interesting, Fun, Challenging and Satisfying from start to end. Graphics for the time are average, Music is above average, Game Play is about as good as it gets. To me this is the best game ever made so this review may be biased a little but not much. It is an adventure, travel and explore the Kingdom of Alefgard, venture into dark caves, poisonous swamps and the towns. Talk to people for info, fight monsters (some of the best ever) to gain experience and gold, buy weapons and items to aid thee in your quest. The evil Dragon Lord awaits, can you seek him out and destroy him to become a Dragon Warrior. Ok it sounds like a commercial but I can't talk about this game without praising it. It has recently be released along with DW2 on GBC. Although there have been changes (some really good ones like not having to choose stairs to go up and down stairs) it retains the feel of the original for the most part and may be a bit more true to the orig Dragon Quest. I give this game a 5/5.

Best RPG ever!
By drewzer on 4/13/2001 1:05:22 AM
In the beginning the nintendo gods created dragon warrior, and it was good..... the best game for it's time.
This started it all for those who love RPG's. I've played this game,....well enough to take the time to write a review about how great it is. This game consists of a warrior who gains experience and gains strategy to live up to his father's name. In this game, you fight magiwyvren, wolflords, wizards, blue dragons and more to become a superior warrior and take over your home land. If you like no-brainer games, then this is not for you. If you get your kicks off of stratigic and difficult games, then this should be a favorite for you. Dragon Warrior 2, 3, and 4 arn't any match for the original. Trust me, take my advice and download this game and start playing it right now because you won't regret that you did. I give this a 5/5
