Sadly, there is no Dig Dug for the NES - only Dig Dug 2. Dig Dug 2 is still a pretty solid game that manages to take the same objectives as the original but mix the gameplay up completely. You still have your trusty pump & you're still going after Pookas and Fygars, but rather than digging underground your drilling above-ground; and rather than leading them under falling rocks you must trap them on small areas of the island and drill it away so they sink into the water. It's a good sequel, because it's not a boring rehash and it's not a total departure. It may not be as addictive as the first, but it's still fun to play once you get the hang of it.
