A Boy and His Blob NES Review - A hit or miss that missed

Like many of these other reviewers, I agree that this game had what it took to be a great puzzle game, but blew it. When I first played it, I noticed the sappy plot, but I didn't let that get to me because many classic games have been built around worse. I'm not going to go into the plot here because if you're visitting this game site, you've probably played it before anyway. So I played the game, and was disappointed. The idea of feeding your blob jellybeans for different tools set the stage for an awesome puzzle game, and the idea of going underground was cool. But then I realized that half of the freakin' game is spent there. What's more, you don't really know what to do. You start out having to turn the blob into a hole in order to go under the subway, but of all of the spots where you can enter the subway, only a small few don't lead to sudden death. It keeps going on like that all the way down-either you land safely or you get screwed. It's more a matter of chance, you have to guess where to go and what to use, gamble your life with every turn. And with only 5 lives the whole first half, the odds are against. I'm not saying that the game's too challenging; I never back down from a game simply because of hard strategy. But there is no strategy here-only a game of trial and error. Aside from that, there really is no sound or varied music, and the enemies are scarce. The graphics aren't bad, but they could've been beter. All in all, this game sounds interesting, but I think anyone would be disappointed to play it.
